Another Year, another stretch where Sean Payton is undefeated without Brees

People also like to blame Hurney for the Grier pick, that was all Scott and Norv.

I will even go as far to say Hurney did not have much say when MoRon was here either, Hurney is a yes man. Nothing more.

Ron wasted the potential of a very talented team.   He can’t compete with better coaches.

You’re only proving my point. Building through the draft is how you create success for consecutive years. Giving away draft capital to get a “franchise” QB is something many on here advocate for and it puts us in the same position we’ve been in the last quarter of a century. Mediocre.

The only time the Panthers moved up for a QB was in rd 2 for Jimmy clausen

do you really think KC regrets moving from 27 to 10 for Mahones or Arizona taking Murray after taking Rosen.

mccaffrey is a great running back. They paid 60M fir him. How many games have they won because of him.

Bottom line, QB is the most important position in the NFL  period   The Panthers don’t have one   If the genius that is supposedly Brady and Rhule feel there is one there, go get him  period

Bridgewater is a stop gap   Newton could have been that stop gap with a franchise tag  but the panthers wanted to move on so they chose to spend 63 million on a backup   It’s over and done but I don’t want to be happy with 6 and 10 for the next five years   If they are going to rebuild, then freaking rebuild

We could trade away all our picks for a TL type and still go 6-10. Not sure why it doesn’t compute for some of you that having a great QB doesn’t win you games unless there is an adequate cast surrounding him. See Cam J. Newton 2011-2019.

Yes. We could go six and 10 but we would at least have something to build on for years

six and 10 once is one thing or 7 and 9 but an average of 7 and 9 for years is not

I just can’t fathom spending $65 million on a coach, giving him a 7 year contract,  and not getting a long term Answer at QB

We have  Alex Smith at best or as someone else said Chad Pennington’ at worst.

Inmho That won’t sell tickets in Charlotte or win many games, Not after Newton.

I ask the question again, do you think Andy Reid has one regret from moving on from Alex Smith and trading away that ‘draft capital’ for his franchise QB?   He knew what he wanted. He knew this kid had it.  He got him

Pat Mahomes has a metric ass ton of weapons, good protection, and a brilliant staff at the helm.

If they’re able to trade all our capital for “the guy” and are able to simultaneously keep all our high priority FA it would be a Christmas miracle. KC is the exception the to rule and you said it yourself, as they traded up they didn’t even take Mahomes in the top 5 (ie. a cheaper move relative to what some on here suggest) so it’s really an apples to oranges discussion.

Then....why didn’t they achieve greatness with Alex Smith ?

here’s the thing, if you don’t get up to bat you have zero chance at home run

thus team is probably going to be picking 6 to 8, if not now when ?

wr have a $65 million coach. His ass should be able to find a long term qb in the draft and do what is needed

If he doesn’t or he can’t than just another failure from this franchise inflected by an  owner

I stand by. The Panthers  need an exceptional talent at qb with an arm and mobility and while teddy is a nice guy and people talk about what a leader he is, I don’t care. Either a pro player has the goods or they don’t

    • In my opinion Fitterer was probably right about not paying McCaffrey. Now not wanting to "pay RBs" in my opinion isn't something you want to set in stone, to me it all comes down to the individual.
    • Maybe I'm just not understanding, but everywhere that I have read says that signing bonuses go against the cap prorated by as much as five years. The following example uses Andrew Luck's rookie contract as an example. "Take Andrew Luck, the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Luck signed a four-year contract with the Colts worth $22.1 million and included a $14.5 million signing bonus. Rather than a $14.5 million cap hit in 2012, the Colts spread out his signing bonus over the life of his contract. The hit against the cap would be $3.625 million per year over four years instead of a direct cap hit of $14.5 million directly in 2012. This gave the Colts more leverage and cap flexibility in signing other players." https://www.the33rdteam.com/nfl-signing-bonuses-explained/ I don't know why some of you think that signing bonuses aren't counted against the cap over the length of the contract, but whatever.   "The bonus with a signing is usually the most garish aspect of a rookie contract. Bonus is the immediate cash players receive when they ink a deal. It factors into the cap, but only for the whole contract duration, in terms of salary cap calculations. In the case of Bryce Young’s $24.6 million signing bonus, that’s prorated to approximately $6.15 million per season over a four-year deal. This format allows teams to handle the cap and provides rookies with some short-term fiscal stability, which is important given the high injury risk in this league." https://collegefootballnetwork.com/how-rookie-contracts-work-in-the-nfl/ I understand how signing bonuses can be a useful tool in order to manage the cap, and as one of the article suggests, signing bonuses may become important if you have a tight cap, but the bill is always going to come due. I'm not necessarily referring to you Tuka, but it seems to me that others simply don't want to understand that fact which is why they're reacting to what I'm saying negatively. How odd. In any event, I have a better general understanding of why signing bonuses are used now, and it's generally to fit salaries under the cap. Surely players, whether they be rookies or not, love a signing bonus because they get a good portion of their money up front. This in turn gives them more security and probably amounts to tax benefits as well. I also understand why teams would not want to use signing bonuses, particularly for players or draftees who have a higher probability of being gone before a contract even ends.
