It helps if you've played team sports before. From a business perspective, the best move is to "evaluate" second and third teamers. But those starters are not stupid. They know exactly what's going on. And if you lose their confidence and trust, you may as well resign.

I even suggested Rhule make a pitch to TB, especially considering TB is not likely to be here long term. But I was wrong, cuz here's the problem: Why would TB go along with that when it's clear all you want to do is draft his replacement? Then you're going to ask him to mentor the guy?

TB is a good dude, but athletes have egos and pride and I can't imagine anyone would go along with that plan. And despite what many here think of TB, the players respect him. If they see the coach doing this to him, none of them will play their asses off for that coach again.

I'm just happy Ron and Marty are gone. That's 2 huge positives for thr last 12 months. Now Rhule can take off the training wheels and back up his talk. I hope he can. I want to see what a full offseason looks like minus the guy who has helped the team be worse every year.

I'm willing to see what the new crew can do before getting bent out of shape about the last 2 games. This is going to be a huge offseason for us going in a completely new direction. Thats a great thing!

Just play a drinking game where everytime Teddy dumps it off short on 3rd you take a shot. The game will fly bye and we will be in the offseason rebuilding this team with the hope of replacing such duds as Teddy, Whitehead, Little, Boston and maybe a OG. That's more hope than I have had in the last 5 years for this team easy.

I don't necessarily want the Panthers to intentionally lose.  I just want them to lose.... organically.

Agreed with the putting the 2nd team in but every player on the team should be ready for competition.  If we draft a QB to this team.  TB should be a team player and help him along.  Doesn't mean he has to give him the job but mentor him to be the best he can be in case TB goes down. If he's not willing to do that I would let the rookie learn on the field and through coaches and let TB go.

Transitioning from one QB to another can be a very dicey time. I think TB is up for it. If the Panthers draft a QB, he knows he'll be expected to mentor the guy and I'm sure he will. But if the players suspect for one second that the coaches are tanking on purpose, they will lose respect for him and won't play for him. It's pretty much that simple. So yeah, I'm hoping the Panthers lose and I think the coaches could make sure that happens, but you run the risk of losing the players' trust, so it's a very thin line to walk. 

Rhule played a lot of players this weekend that don't often see a lot of playing time. The problem was, Washington was just too bad. You can't ask your special teams player to not fall on that fumble in the end zone. You can't just drop interceptions. We had a 2nd string guard playing LT. Next week, we're likely to have a practice squad player there. We had Tahir Whitehead in the game and he makes a great interception. Players play, you can't tell them not to. And pro players, despite what some people believe, are darn good football players and occasionally make plays.

There's only so far a coach can go to "throw" a game. I think Rhule went about as far as he could without damaging the players' trust. Theoretically, he could sit Teddy next week and claim to want to evaluate Grier. Makes sense. But it's risky. Rhule has to make that call based primarily on something he has that none of us do: an intimate knowledge of his players' psyches.

Because they are both worse than TB and most likely not a part of this team next year.

I think you're thinking too much into this. Rhule has the players regardless, and Teddy B won't be here in two years. And I'm not so sure he's a "good dude" with him throwing the coaches specifically the OC under the bus. Players are very easy to read. Just like McCaffrey not being healthy, right?

Yes, I believe benching your starters with two games to go in a meaningless year wouldn't hurt the "team bravado" as you thought.

I don't care about that. And I did in HS, that line of thinking is dumb when the NBA tanks on purpose year in and year out. IT works just fine for them. But, team sports, huh?
