Philip Rivers retiring

The man whose good-natured hollering was as renowned as his highly unorthodox and highly effective throws is hanging up his helmet to put on a different hat.

Philip Rivers, who came to San Diego in a draft-day trade in 2004 and played quarterback for the Chargers all but his final season in the NFL, will announce his retirement today.

“It’s just time,” Rivers told the Union-Tribune late Tuesday night from his home in Indianapolis, where earlier this month he completed his only season with the Colts. “It’s just right.”

Yep, he took a middling Colts team to the playoffs on his back, not in spite of his play.  It's sad he didn't get out of San Diego sooner.

Yeah. Rivers was really fun to watch with his incessant-yet-somehow clean trash talking and gunslinger style. The kind of guy you hate to play against and love to have on your team(except when he is making Favre-esque crippling INT's). 

Not many gunslingers left in the league now.

He went to college in NC, but grew up in Alabama.

poo, Rivers isn't the only HOF caliber talent that franchise has squandered. They were the Panthers before we existed.

Ehh not really. He was solid for sure and helped them make the playoffs but that D is great and they are well coached. Running game picked it up late in the year too. He was a piece of the puzzle for them but hardly carried them on his back at all.

I always begrudgingly liked Rivers. I have no love for that glorified community college that he attended (that's possibly insulting to decent community colleges), but he seems like a good dude and he was a fun player to watch.

They likely wouldn't have made the playoffs with the rest of their roster of QB's. Remember, they already tried that. 

QB driven league, remember. Rivers was the only top QB they have had since the remnants of what used to be Andrew Luck left. That's actually the saddest part about the Indy situation, they built a great team around him but he couldn't hold up to take advantage of it. I would be really upset as a Colts fan.

I wouldn't say that he carried them, but he was a good QB for them and a major upgrade over Brissett. They definitely wouldn't have gone to the playoffs in this year's AFC with Brissett starting.
