First name that comes to mind is Mike Ditka. He wasn't necessarily great long-term but he did get a Super Bowl ring and coached one of the best teams in history.

Thought provoking question though. I feel like I'm missing somebody.

I always hear some old timers talk about how good Jim Zorn was with the Seahawks. He wasn’t a very good HC though.

in the NBA and college hoops, I’m starting to see more of the guys I know about and grew up watching that were good get head coaching jobs — Steve Nash, Kidd, Stack, Juwon Howard, etc

in the NFL the best guy I probably saw who is now a HC would have to be Mike Vrabel. I did see Kingsbury play against Rivers at NCSU in person but Kingsbury is probably dead man walking as a head coach.

Took me a few minutes but I figured out who I was forgetting:...

Tony Dungy. He also has a Super Bowl ring and was pretty good for a while.

Pederson played too but his career is going in the wrong direction.

Yeah I think Dungy was a safety. But this goes back to my point to the other guy who said McCown sucks and doesn’t deserve to be a coach - when most coaches were sucky players. Did Belicheck even play college football?

Not that I know of.

And yeah, as far as guys that were successful as both players and coaches, it's probably Ditka.

Vrabel is looking like he'll get there. And there's an argument to be made for Jim Harbaugh, I suppose.

He played college ball.  Wesleyan.  Offense.  Which you would have kinda assume it would have been defense given his coaching career.

Art Shell probably has best resume as a player who went on to become a NFL coach.  HOFer as a player.

Shell's a great example too.

Pretty sure he and Ditka each made the Hall of Fame for their resumès both on the field and the sidelines.

    • Especially with no other major sports in the area other than UNCW basketball and soccer. It's a good 2 1/2 hour drive just to catch a collegiate football game. If this new arena were built I would hope it also includes an Adult League - I would join up and time allowing would be more than happy to help coach some youth teams. 😄
    • That was real fear in his eyes when the rope was being taken. My younger days, I had my best friend that happened to be black come over all the time. I had the nicest bulldog on the planet, my friend Damon was scared to death of him. His grandmother and daddy taught him to fear all dawgs and seen the same fear in his face and voice.    I think alllll young kids should take swimming lessons and not fear the water. Very thankful my parents did this, I no longer get in the ocean since its 50% sewage. But I enjoyed all the lakes, pools, and oceans I swam in.
    • My personal opinion is the non-guaranteed contract is the main reason for NFL success. MLB and NBA players are on cruise control after their big contracts and it shows in the product.  NFL is each year you are fighting for your job. Same for the majority of the public.... You get lazy or try to coast after the 100+ million contract, your ass will be cut within 1-2 years. Then the next one will not even touch 100 million+. Besides a few NBA players like Kobe was coming for blood with a 300 million contract or 1 doll hair deal. Brandy Beal just reached a buyout where he was getting 110 million, many other cases..... I dare say his name for the hornets guy..... MLB sooo many times as well.    If the NFL starts fully guaranteeing all contracts, Id have a new hobby to fill the hours of entertainment NFL gave me.
