what's with all the Brian Burns homer takes?  he was tied for 15th in sacks and FF this year, not in the top 100 for tackles.  At best a top 25%ile starting DE, he's not some untouchable Mack, Watt or Garrett, goodness.  If he's the dealmaker, get it done without losing an ounce of sleep, WGAF

All true.

His gross contractual pay so far has been almost $41 million...the net-take obviously significantly lower after paying the agent, taxes, etc...

...next 5-years are worth $146,540,000.00 cold hard cash.

That's a lot of money to walk away from because your feelings got hurt -- I don't think he would ever do so.

This is also not including any money he has made in endorsements or other typical athlete revenue streams. Yes, they may be minimal in comparison to what his annual salary would be but he could still easily net substantial amounts of endorsement or appearance money while he is sitting out. More than enough so that he would likely never have to touch what he has already made.

Everyone is forgetting that other teams can make offers also.  It isn’t as simple as making a good offer, you have to make a better offer than the other teams.

Two 1st and Burns from us or Three 1st from the Jets?

They probably take the Jets offer so the can grab QB2.  They would probably take just 2 first from  the Jets over our offer. Don’t underestimate the allure of being a ole to draft a potential franchise QB.

Yeah but we are all making hypothetical offers anyway. We have no idea what the ACTUAL price is nor what each team is even prepared to offer.

What other teams offer at some point becomes irrelevant. We had the opportunity to snag Matt Stafford but LA outbid us. At a certain point, your price is just your price. I would rather miss out on this deal entirely than make some completely insane offer that puts us in Houston Texans territory.

Even the best RB in the NFL is still just a running back. Ladainian Tomlinson was the same sort of RB that CMC is. He also retired without any Super Bowl trophies. Marshall Faulk didn't have any titles until Kurt Warner showed up. That I am talking about eras in which RB's mattered a great deal more.

Take a look at the last 15 leading rushers on the Super Bowl champions and the cost will stick out like a sore thumb. The fact of the matter is, it is a losing strategy to have a running back as one of your highest paid players.

Technically you could say a quarterback is just a quarterback while comparing Deshaun Watson to Teddy Bridgewater.

I'm not really talking about his pay. Like I said, Marty wrote that contract so it's kind of expected to be bad.

What I've pointed out is that the suggestions that he could be easily replaced with a guy like Mike Davis are absolute buffoonery.

If you can't see it, we can't make you see it. All I can I say is that you might want to get some film study in.

How about you paint the scenario of their owner eating $35-42 mil in dead cap for 5 years over some sense of "pride?"

He will fold, or he wasn't a very smart businessman, he was just very lucky.

Technically, Cal inherited the team.

I don't know what kind of businessman he is. All indications are that as a team owner, he's sh-t.

No, you really can't. Elite QB's have an established track record of translating to titles(divisional, conference, Superb Owl, etc). RB's just don't.

Feel free to peruse the leading rushers and leading passers over the past decade. I've posted about this before, the trend is extraordinarily obvious.

We really shouldn't need much in the way of proof of that. While CMC has been putting up historic numbers, it has been leading to more and more losses.

He's an amazing and elite player at a completely devalued position in the modern NFL.

You need to look at his actual pressure rate, which is near the top of the league.  Burns played at a Pro-Bowl level this year in spite of a lot of double teams, chipping, etc.  He was absolutely snubbed.

Other than Shaq Barrett, there is no one else in the NFC South that is comparable to Burns as a pass rusher, especially since Cam Jordan seems to be in decline.

I want Watson, but the idea that giving up Burns isn't a big deal is absurd.  He's one of the most talented players on the Panthers roster, and he hasn't even hit his prime yet.

Burns will be a double-digit sack guy year-in and year-out if he has consistent help on the line.  Those guys don't grow on trees, and the only way I would consider trading him would be a situation like with Watson.

He might not be valuable in your eyes, but every GM & coach in the league would take Burns tomorrow.

The complete and utter lack of understanding of NFL positional value in the Huddle amazes me sometimes. Literally all you have to do is pay attention to the contracts being signed, the positions being drafted in the top 15 and that is it. It's not hard.

Maybe the question is will we love Burns as much after he gets his $100M+ deal? Because all the love for him reminds me of previous Huddle DLine love for people like Jenkins, Johnson, and Short. Then they get paid and suddenly they're not worth their money.

It won't shock me one bit to see Huddle threads in 2025 talking about Burns as a waste of space.

I think Huddlers love getting champagne level performance from beer budget guys. I guess you get used to that though with a franchise started by a Hardee's and Bojangles owner.

He's not better than a Garrett/Mack/Watt and even if he's as good as you say he is, he's going to cost a pretty penny to keep regardless.  Even a top tier pass rusher doesn't move an NFL line on game day.  Absolutely nothing compares to an elite QB, period.

The best Sportsbook handicappers in the world don't think a single pass rusher, outside of maybe LT historically, moves a point spread more than 0.5 at most given their presence.  QBs like Watson can move a spread by more than a touchdown.  Yes he's worth ten Brian Burns by the people who know value the most

    • I gave you a full breakdown and examples from last year as to why I think it's unfair to expect 1k from T-Mac this year if everyone stays healthy. But the TLDR version is we will have 4 legitimately good WRs next year, most rookies who get to 1,000 yards don't have any others on the team with them let alone 3 others, it will be hard for him to put up 1k with out the others being injured or falling short of expectations themselves, but in 2026 without Thielen it's different.
    • Ulcerative Colitis is not CTE.
    • Last year Thielen had 615 yards in 10 games (had more ypg than his 1k season in 23).  XL had 497 in 16 games with tons of drops and Coker had 478 in 11. They also only had only 192 of our 518 targets to get those numbers. So if Thielen has 1,000 yards again, XL and Coker each improve to say 600 yards each, and T-Mac comes in at 800 yards, you're going to say that's not good enough?  Especially if he ends up with close to, if not getting to, double digit TD's like I think he will, as he's going to be a red zone monster for Bryce? Because if that's the breakdown of just the Top 4 and Bryce plays all 17 games, he's going to be pushing a 4,000 yard season as the TEs, RBs, and other WRs will probably add up to 750-1k yards as well, and I think that would be far more than anyone here could be expecting of him this season. Last year the Giants only had 2 players with more than 331 yards besides Nabers and they were 699 and 573 while Nabers "only" had 1,200 yards (granted in 15 games).  While the Jags second leading receiving was a TE with 411 yards and BTJ also "only" had 1,282 but in all 17 games. Odunze couldn't get there (734 in 17 games) with Moore and Allen there, just as McConkey was able to get there because his competition for targets was Quentin Johnson (711 yards), Josh Palmer (584), and Will Dissly (481) who I think Thielen, XL, and Coker are all better than any of them. If everyone stays healthy and XL/Coker have improved, I think Bryce is going to spread the ball around rather than focus on T-Mac in a way that most of the 1k rookies have been able to get. Again I point to MHJ and the Cardinals last year. They had 3,859 yards receiving.   McBride had 1,146, MHJ had 885, then their 3rd and 4th in rec yards were 548 and 414. Take the 146 and 85 that McBride/MHJ had over my example for our guys and give them to the other two and they get to 7 yards shy of the 600 I'm using for XL/Coker, while the rest of the team added up to 866 yards. So, if you expect T-Mac to get to 1k, where are you taking those yards from? if anything, XL and Coker each getting 600 yards seems like a low projection, so they wouldn't come from there. Maybe they come from Thielen now that we have T-Mac as the true #1.  But I think if anything, having T-Mac draw attention will just make it easier for Thielen to get open and him and Bryce have great chemistry already, he's not going to stop throwing his way if he can pick up easy chunks of yards there. So maybe they come from the RBs, TEs, other WRs, but it's I think a very fair example to show why expecting 1,000 yards if everyone stays healthy isn't necessarily fair to him. It's also why I said I'd then expect at least 1,200 yards in 2026, as once Thielen leave and all 3 of T-Mac/XL/Coker get better, they absorb that 1,000 yards Thielen leaves behind with T-Mac probably taking close to half of it and the other two splitting up the other half.
