Did this campaign somehow force Fields to look bad in some of his biggest games?

He played the best D coordinator in the first round both times.  Beat the poo out of Clemson this year.   An all time performance.

year before?  He had Clemson at the end of the game.  WR quit running.  That ain’t on Fields.  The other pick was the probably the best defensive player in the game making a great play and leaving his responsibly to make the play.

He didn’t perform poorly against Clemson.

He didn’t play great vs Bama.  That is one game.   Against the best roster and coach in all of college.

Trevor looked really bad vs LSU and that wasn’t even a great defense.  And he had a healthy O roster that year around him.  Bad games happen.

I don’t think it is some “campaign” to discredit Fields but instead some actual metrics that are a bit concerning when trying to predict the ability to translate to the next level.

The question is, are these issues because he can’t or because he wasn’t asked to because of the system he was in.

I do agree with you that his accuracy and arm talent is as great.  If you ask him to drop back and throw to his first read he is as good as anyone, including Trevor.

Personally I’m higher on him than most because I think some of the so called perceived issues can be fixed with coaching.

Knock on Fields is not processing stuff quick enough.  And yeah, holding on to the ball too long is part of that.

ball placement/accuracy? I’m a Trevor stan and I’d give that to Fields over Trevor.  Wilson ain’t better in that department.

Fields has great mechanics.  Great ball placement.  Great legs.  And we got people saying he does nothing better than Wilson?

Like the Northwestern game?

Fields has the same knock on him as a dozen Ohio State quarterbacks before him, i.e. quarterback on a dominant team rather than dominant quarterback.

Throw in the inconsistencies and the questions about his reads and you have plenty of busy potential at the pro level.

They had 22 players out with COVID in the game vs Northwestern.  Game before cancelled because of COVID.  Had 23 players out the game prior to that.  Game before that cancelled due to COVID.   Ohio St not being a fine tuned machine wasn't a Justin Field's problem.

All teams weren't dealing w/ the same COVID scenario.  Clemson for example had a high percentage get infected before the season started.  As a result, they would have one or two or three guys out a given week.  Generally not even a starter.  Totally manageable.  Was basically dealt with like a standard weekly injury where 1 guy might be out.   Ohio St was dealing with something completely different.  Yet, the emphasis on Fields is that comical COVID window where Ohio St had an assortment of 20+ athletes out every week for over a month straight in the heart of the season.

What about Zach Wilson's big games?  The Hawaii Bowl vs a crap defense where he was horrible.  Or how bad he was in games vs Utah and San Diego St that same year? What would you define as the best game Zach Wilson every played as being?

What are the question marks on Wilson? How is a comparison of the two just a criticism of Fields.  Again, we got folks claiming there is nothing Fields does better than Wilson lol.  Which is absurd.

You and CRA both bring up valid points about Fields and Wilson...and that's why I'm not sold on either one of these quarterbacks. I'm shocked so many people are in favor of giving up multiple #1 picks and a couple of other high choices to move up 6 spots in the draft and take either of them.

If one of them fell to number 8, I can see considering it because you still have all of your draft choices to fill in the rest of the roster holes and build a stronger team around him. If we kept Teddy for another year you wouldn't even have to start him right away and give him time to get acclimated to the NFL.

When you start giving away multiple picks inside the first 3 rounds in multiple years for these guys with all of our roster holes, that's a sign of desperation. We need to stay put and get the BPA or even trade down a couple of slots to gain extra picks if we can.

Everybody's fault but Fields, eh?

As to Wilson, question marks about whether he'll be durable enough at the NFL level scare me...a lot.

Ohio St had different assortment of 20+ athletes out each with COVID for over a month.  Just reality.  And that is the window you selectively are choosing to focus on with Justin Fields.   Which is silly.   Especially when he has an entire season of work that exists against top tier competition in 2019 and the CFP in 2020 when they finally were out of that COVID nightmare.

Being a one hit wonder vs weak competition is always a red flag for me.    As are QBs that consistently bail from a clean pockets.    That is one of those QB DNA things for me.  That's Wilson.

And yet the general consensus among actual professor scouts is that Wilson is the better quarterback.

Now with that said, if your perception is that I'm a big Wilson fan, you're wrong. I like his skill set a lot, but as mentioned I have major concerns about his durability.

To get either fields or Wilson likely requires a trade up, and I'm not in favor of that in either case.

So how often in the last 10 years was a QB available at our spot in the first round that you didn’t have concerns about?

Just not you, that probably applies for all of us.  I didn’t have concerns about Luck and Manning, feel pretty good about Trevor.

QBs are hard to find, fact is there aren’t many that don’t have concerns and they usually go 1st overall.  Even then it’s not every year.  Plenty of years where the top QB has some concerns.

Another chart for you guys forming opinions off of random highlights,

Both Wilson and Fields are extremely accurate to all levels of the field.

A bit surprised to see Trevor behind them as much as he is.

Also there are some definite concerns with Lance.

    • Yeah, nobody has ever been drafted successfully in the NFL who had a breakout final season in college of course......A good final season in college of course always means failure in the NFL........
    • Yeah, everyone of the same body type plays exactly the same on the field for sure.
