Hornets vs Hurricanes

I realize we are on a Charlotte based fan base message board.   But teams like the Panthers transcend city or county lines.  They are beloved by two states, not just the city of Charlotte.

My question is, do you feel the Hornets are more than a city team ?   Do you think the Hurricanes are more than a city team ?

I live on the coast.  I can not watch the Hornets on TV. ( unless they are on the NBA network or some national network and yeah, that doesn't happen lol ) The Hornets are rarely if ever competitive.  I'm not even sure they're mediocre . The Panthers in a small market have intense following.  Not so for the Hornets.

Why wouldn't the Hornets front office make efforts to have their product available on TV in more locations in the Carolinas ??

So  living 200 miles from an NBA team and there is little to no interest in them east of  I-95.

Where as the Hurricanes are on the Bally network often, ( the old Fox Sport South Carolina ) .  The Hurricanes have been competitive. Even won Lord Stanley's Cup.

Hockey is not a southern sport and if you don't watch it, or go to games, you can't really grasp the nuances.  Where as basketball is very prevalent in NC and no one has to figure out what off sides is lol.

So do you Hornets fan follow the Hurricanes and their success ?  or even care ?   Because I really don't think there is a much of a following for the Hornets outside of 75 miles of Charlotte.

A history of a poorly run team doesn't help the Hornets case.

Bob Johnson's biggest and most lasting error was to sign away broadcasting rights to Big Cable. The Hornets originally were on LOCAL television all over NC and SC now Big Cable has taken our Hornets viewership hostage and probably won't relent.

If they weren't so selfish and shortsighted they'd license out at least a third or half the games to local broadcasters throughout NC and SC.

Again, they are only concerned about CONTROL, not you, so we all continue to suffer and the Hornets may continue to be irrelevant in their own back yard as far as viewership/following/new local fanship/jersey sales.

The Hornets are a city team. The Hurricanes are supposed to be a dual state team but in reality are only really liked in the Triangle.

I live on the coast.  I see a lot more Hurricane gear on the beach , usually in the form or hats or tees,, but almost no Hornet gear.  With the Canes success this season, I'm seeing more Hurricane flags on homes, bumper stickers, etc.  Never a Hornet.

Maybe you're right,,  the NBA teams are city teams..   but don't tell New England that when it comes to the Celtics .

I have diretv ..   and we get BallyCarolina..   and the Hornets aren't included.  Evidently they are as Jayboogieman mentioned on the BallySoutheast.  Either way, we can't see them for free in eastern NC, and I think that is a big problem.

Maybe the Hornet/ NBA doesn't care about anything east of I 95 lol.  It is a lowly populated area. But it doesn't cost them to allow me to watch LOL

Steve Martin helped get the Hornets on a lot of systems(cable, DTV, Dish, ETC) before he retired. I live east of 95 and have DirecTV too. Bally Southeast is part of the sports channel package or whatever DTV calls it these days. I see a Hornets cap or shirt here an there, but it is rare.

Johnson might not have had a choice if the other owners all wanted the cable money. All of the NBA teams are broadcast on regional sports networks. I'm sure Johnson didn't mind taking the money either.

They're betting on an old format. Nobody wants to pay $200 a month for that particular package that gets you the Bally network that currently carries the games for the Charlotte market. Mind you, you are forced to pay for a bunch of channels you don't want just to have the one you watch. That's sooooo 90's.

People are better off paying for some antivirus and watching it on these shady streaming sites. And they wonder why "ratings are down", part of the reason are the exclusively outdated cable deals.

I'll never condone piracy, but I agree about the forced package or channel bundling. Sadly, the cable industry lobbyists have too much sway, so the FCC can't force the providers to offer a la cart channel choices. And that is something I've read has been brought up a time or two in congress, but it never gets any traction.

The NBA is hedging its bets with their league pass streaming offerings, but those games can be subject to blackout rules.

Ratings shouldn't be DOWN if everybody wants to watch the Hornets.

Bally needs to share, maybe people that see a third of the games may want to upgrade to cable but don't come between a team, it's profits, popularity and it's community.

Back in the day every Hornets game was on WJZY here in Charlotte channel 46.

Bally needs to call them.

Ratings are down across the board and it's been a trend for a few years now. Even the NFL has seen a drop in ratings. People just have too many choices for entertainment these days. This is a big reason you see companies and leagues pushing into India and China. The US market peaked, so they are looking into the next biggest markets. Those markets also happen to have the potential to be bigger than the US market thanks to the population difference. The NBA is also a niche product these days. The NBA's heyday was when MJ was in his prime. It's been downhill since.

Bally won't share, just like all the other regional sports channels won't. Being the only place to see the Hornets or Hurricanes is a huge selling point. The networks and leagues are trying to force everyone to pay to watch. I can't remember the last time I watched a Hornets game or even a collage game that was part of the old Jefferson Pilot Sports Network on different local stations. Everything now is TV rights for a whole league locked into deals with ABC/ESPN, CBS, Fox, NBC, or Turner Sports. And they are taking it further with individual channels now like the ACC Network that launched last year.

The Hornets isn’t even a real team. Been a terrible franchise since the rebirth. The Hurricanes own the state of NC. Western Carolinians don’t talk much about the team but the team is in the back of everyone’s mind. The Hornets is the more popular team but everyone knows it’s trash.

never seen a post match the poster's name so well.. kudos
