How much of the Jets performance was really on Darnold?

We should beat the jets, and I want Darnold to light them up.  It will not be a good sign to lose that game.  That said...

The Jets in 2020 had the toughest schedule in the league with a .594 SOS.  They beat two winning, playoff teams,  Cleveland (11-5)  and the Rams (10-6).

Any. Given. Sunday.

We did NOT beat a single winning team last year.  Our record, might have been similar if we played the same schedule.   Some of their difficulties were caused by their competition.

Yep.  They certainly did.....with Sam Darnold playing no small role in both wins.  🤨

for it all?    Darnold caused the punt team to suck?  That's what you're going with?  His play was so bad it was contagious?  OK...I'm sorry, but now you're reaching.

Darnold may well bust, and the historical odds are, he will.  But he did not keep Bell to 3.2 yards a game, or cause the defense to give up yards and touch downs.  QB's are important.  They are not  magical gods.

It was yards a carry.  This lack of edit thing sucks.

If you don't respect the QB stack the box...next

Offense can't move the ball, defense gets tired out...next

Special teams really, they cost the Jets the game more so than a QB play...well I never

We'll get the answer as the weeks roll on.

Interesting, maybe, but Matthew Stafford played under not-so-great conditions for the lion's share (oh, snap, I didn't even see what I did there) of his career. When you start breaking down stats, he was pretty damned good, though on a sucky team.  Darnold wasn't good...but, he was in an even worse situation. Darnold began his career in a clusterfug of a situation surrounded by ineptitude and disjointedness in pretty much all respects. But there were just enough flashes, however imperceptible to casual football fans, for the professionals to give him his Matt Stafford-opportunity though he is on the bottom of the career curve--which really plays in his favor--and Stafford is somewhere near the the top of the career curve (playing like a top five, or at least 10 QB), plucked from a mess, and now expected to legitimately compete for championships.

That's right, everyone respected the awe inspiring jets oline, and Gase's offensive genius but disrespected Darnold so they stacked the box.

...your punts are worse than the jets.

And the ball running?  Gase's offensive performance in Miami?

The jets performance BEFORE Darnold was awe inspiring too.  I'm willing to bet just the thought of Darnold coming to NY caused them to have the number 3 pick that year.

Darnold may actually be a bust, but you are deluding yourself into thinking he was the source of the majority of their suckage.

Sam Darnold has yet to be protected by a competent offensive line, he has yet to throw a single pass to a true # 1 receiver, and the Jets never paired him with a coach or an offensive coordinator who had been able to build an offense around his strengths.

The mistakes started with Todd Bowles, who entrusted Jeremy Bates as the offensive coordinator to develop Darnold.

They continued with Mike Maccagnan, who never made building an offensive line a priority, whiffed on landing him a big-time weapon with the disastrous signing of Le’Veon Bell, and recommended hiring coach Adam Gase.

The Jets let his favorite weapon, Robby Anderson, leave for a reasonable price. And Gase, in 22 games as head coach never showed even a tiny sign that he made Darnold better with his offensive schemes.

And of course, CEO Christopher Johnson oversaw the team through all of it and allowed it to happen.

Darnold took the playing field at that critical juncture in his career with so little talent around him that it makes it difficult to evaluate him properly.

Yup.  We should get a good eval this fall.  If he's anywhere near a #3 pick, we won lottery and Rhule & Brady will be celebrated as geniuses.  If it doesn't, we're out some draft picks and missed a shot at using our 8th for our franchise qb....and we have to go though more rebuilding....bleh.

You get that he's not actually trying to come to any sort of genuine understanding, right?

He's trying to wish this fantasy world where PJ Walker is a starter quality quarterback into existence.

It's stupid, but hey... 😕

I missed the PJ Walker thing...that must be in another thread.

Thanks for heads up.

There's another thread talking about Bell throwing shade on Gase which touched on how much this is Gase's fault.

When you see crap in all phases of the game like we saw in the jets, that's coaching. No doubt.

But the GM hired him, who also traded away the jets future to move up a couple spots to get Darnold...and then whiffed on draft pick after draft pick...until all of their 1st rounders are no longer on the team.

They lost out on Rhule because they wanted to do the assistant coaching decisions...cause you know.... they're so good at coaching picks.

When they went to replace the GM, the owner passed on Fit....

and the new GM gifts us Robbie and trades Darnold.

I hope we blast the living daylights out the jets week1 and they sit and wonder what might have been.

I think the owner was like an ambassador to the UK or something.  I don't think anyone is minding the store.

Yep.  And I got poo'd in that thread by kungfoodude for telling someone that the title of the thread should be "Le'veon Bell tells the Truth about Gase and his Playcalling".    Am I wrong?

I got pooed on that thread too, for saying Le'veon Bell performance contributed to the problem.

One thing for Darnold, he never attacked anyone or made excuses as far as I can tell.  He didn't play well but it wasn't all his fault....but as far as I can tell...he never said it.

Looks like a stand up guy.

    • If mitchell and ladd are that good they will be gone by the time we pick again at 39. That would leave some other good players left...if not then they are available to be picked up as well. Double dip
    • Exactly I mean Kyle Shanahan passed up on him for Ricky Pearsall
