The honeymoon is over for me with Rod. He has no idea what he is doing. Especially when it comes to goal tending decisions. We are now stuck in purgatory where we will be good, but not good enough and continue to get man handled by better teams and not when a Cup. This was a terrible decision and will set us back years and we may not be able to recover. You can't win anything without a really good goalie. Mrazek's best days are behind him. Rod is on notice as far as I'm concerned.

So I am not going to regurgitate the entire article because I think everyone interested in competent writing and reporting should be subscribing to the Athletic, but here are a few snippets from Sara Civian's latest on today's activities:

1. Arbitration could have gotten weird

“We tried to get a contract done with Ned, and we couldn’t get one done. The agent was playing very hard,” Hurricanes GM Don Waddell said in an exclusive interview with The Athletic on Thursday. “He’s got an arbitration case that (could have paid him) somewhere around $3, $4, $5 million.

2. Committed to winning now

“You probably can’t have two goalies at $3.5 to $4 million. You gotta pay one, then one hopefully on the lesser side,” he said. “And here’s the thing: We aren’t trying to save money — we’re trying to save cap space. That’s the whole idea.

“We’re fortunate to have (owner) Tom (Dundon), who is willing to go to the cap, but now we have to manage the cap and make the right decisions with the money we have.”

3. But what about No. 1?

“I think we’re looking more toward the veteran side of things,” he said. “We’re in a win-now mode, and having a veteran goalie makes the most sense for our franchise right now. So hopefully that’s the direction we end up in.”

“We’ve got some things going on, obviously, but at the end of the day, I think we’re a destination place,” Waddell said. “We’ve got a good defense and an open net. I think we’ve got a spot that’s pretty appealing to a lot of guys.”

Easy, you get rid of Mrazek. Problem solved. This team is doomed with Dundon and Rod.

Win Now Mode - If you are really in a win now mode - priority #1 is to have a goalie that STOPS THE PUCK !!!  We know that Petr is pretty much going to give up 3 goals a game.   yes he might have the occasional good game but in a close game can you really count on him - NOPE..   Should have spent the Coin on Ned..   you won't have to worry about my season ticket renewal unless the decision making on personnel gets better..

Literally the only thing that's going to make me feel a little better about this is if we sign Landeskog. Even then I still question it because Ned signed with Detroit for such a reasonable amount!

If I’m not mistaken he couldn’t take them to arbitration, only us. So if Waddell says he was asking for 5 here and wouldn’t budge it makes sense. His agent outplayed him it sounds like. Perhaps he didn’t want to be here anymore either for what ever reason.

Counter point is it sounds like we were trying to get him for 2.5 and he said no. I bet we would have gone to three but his agent going full on arbitration did not sound like something Waddell wanted to negotiate at all.

Mrazek is once again the #1 goalie.

Of course, Bernier is a complete unknown the last 3 seasons posting a 3.03 GAA while in Detroit with one of the worst teams in the NHL in front of him. But, his numbers are also getting worse with age.

That being said, what's the diff between him and Reimer? They're the same goalie. Reimer is making $3.5M while Bernier was making $3M, so wtf?

Bernier is a UFA as of the 28th. I’m assuming we are going to sign him for 1-1.5 or perhaps even let him walk if we get a better situation. I feel like we are going to target a moderately high priced goalie.

    • Here are more fun facts about Peyton Manning's rookie season: Peyton ranked 3rd in total passing yards, 5th in passing touchdowns, 4th in 1st-down completions, 11th in TD%, and 8th in completions that were 20 yards or more.  Now let's look at how Bryce compared to his peers: 20th in total passing yards, 28th in passing TDs, 21st in 1st-down completions, 31st in TD%, and 27th in completions that were 20 yards or more.  To put it mildly, Peyton showed plenty of flashes as a franchise quarterback. Bryce? Not so much, almost none at all, as a matter of fact. Oh, and Peyton is legit 6'4", literally head and shoulders above Bryce. I sometimes wonder if Bryce defenders are sentient at all.
