What are you Looking For? What does Success Look Like?

Preseason games are weird and it is a cliche to point out that good teams often go 0-4 in the preseason. So what are you looking for? Who will you be watching?

Unforced Errors: Yes, the DBO sign is dumb. Very dumb. Like high school coach from a 1998 Disney movie dumb. But there is truth to it. More than the performance of any player, I want to see how well-coached the players are, particularly those at the bottom of the depth chart. Can they avoid simple mistakes. Rhule is supposed to be able to coach players up so let's see it. I want to see if the culture he is building plays out on the field.

Jermain Carter - always been high on this young man. I don't know that he will ever be more than a solid backup, but I hope he succeeds and it looks like this year will be his shot.

Christian Miller - I remember some hype around him when he was drafted and that he was good value for where we picked. But then he sat out 2020 so this is basically his rookie year and LB is a question mark for us. Hope he shows up.

Daviyon Nixon - Lot of hype when drafted. Haven't heard much from camp

Special Teams Play - Obviously curious to see who emerges as our returners but more interested in what the coverage units look like.

Safety Play - I like Burris but we need better and in a passing league back up safeties will get playing time. Wondering if Franklin or someone else will provide good depth

The Entire Offensive Line Forever Because Nothing Else Matters - Rhule Says starters won't be playing. Don't know what that means in this context given that as far as I can tell we only have one starter on our OL. Not sure who will be playing and who won't but there could be a chance that someone who gets playing time today will start later in the season. Hoping Christianson and Deonte Brown do well.

What will you be looking for? What does success look like for a preseason game?

    • You are right--it was DC.  I remember talking to him at Belk in Albemarle one day--the Panthers were on a bye and they were (at the time) a disapointing 4-4.  I mentioned that the record was disappointing and he seemed to get a bit annoyed.  He dId not say anything.  I trying to suggest that we will get better, but I think he was pretty upset about it.  No hard feelings, but the man was simply trying to shop with his wife and this annoying jerk starts making comments about his job---I get it.  I apologized, telling him that I was trying to be supportive and not critical--he did not think it was a big deal.  I'd see him at events from time to time-he'd wave or say hi, but it was awkward for me.  Figured I would say something stupid.  Jordan was pretty popular--nothing like she seems to be now--she is holding her own in a man's world...proud of her.
    • Like we have had the last 3 years.
    • In May of 2026, it looks like a challenging schedule...and it probably is.  I rarely listen to the "strength of schedule" conversations that light up social media this time of year. Each year teams improve and decline. I think there's chunks of the year we need to take care of business and the week 5 bye is not desired.  I do think if we don't hit the bye week at 3-1, it's going to be a major uphill battle given the schedule in front of us. This season falls on three people, regardless of schedule strength: Canales, Bryce, Evero.  Canales: Finally can truly coach all aspects of the team and not focus with gameday prep for OC duties anymore. He drives the bus and needs to get these guys in position to win each week. There's no way vets come in and put it on the line every week to watch our QB sh!t the bed (See: SF game last year). Bryce: Despite everyone's obsession with thinking Bryce is a guaranteed extension, I think this year will truly be his "prove it" year. If he comes out the way he has the past three years, I really don't see how vets and coaches can continue to put him under center long-term. He might play out that fifth year as the starter, but I think next offseason his long-term replacement is found. I also think there's no excuses with the weapons and commitment we've made on offense to insulate him with every possible weapon.  Evero: Best personnel he's had since he's been here...no excuses. Figure out how to blitz effectively. Figure out how to use CBs whose strengths are press/man. Figure out how to utilize a talented front-7 to get the hell of the field. Outside of FS and maybe....maybe ILB, there are few weaknesses on this unit.
