What was the explanation for punting on the Jets 33 yard line?

Well, the real problem….is Rhule going into the season with a guy that had shown for a half decade he wasn’t a NFL FG kicker.   Just a very bad kickoff specialist.

hard to champion Rhule for a problem of his own creation.

I agree with that... "It could be worse" isn't much of an endorsement heh

I suspect we will see a fake kick/punt in the next two weeks tbh. He called what 6 or 7 last season? This may just be him getting it on film that we would punt.

I think it was just a gamble he chose to try that had minimal to no impact on the outcome of the game.

Rhules a gambler, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.  This is a nothing burger.

That he certainly is and In the moment he probably wasn't thinking about it that way but I'd be surprised if wasnt now.

I’m pretty sure Matt Rhule and company simply went into the season with a guy they didn’t and had no reason to trust…..so they punted.

I like a good football conspiracy theory.  But even I’m not buying it was all to set up a fake punt from the 33 later.

Fake fg maybe, I'm just saying I bet we see a fake kick in the next few weeks.

Slye had the upside of a massive leg, Santos was maxed out in the 40 yard range.

I doubt that.  He made a 52 yarder in preseason.

I do think he had issues with kicking a little low.  And maybe we should have cut him, but I am not sure the guy we are picking up is an improvement.

He barely made a 52 yarder and it was a bounce in, I'm betting in practice that was the maximum extent of his range. For all his shortfalls and inaccuracies Slyle had the leg to hit from 70.

Not sure about the new guy or Santos, quite possible we were better off with Slye.

    • With Schoen and Dan Morgan being tight I’d figure we knew this was coming and since he is released, Dan didn’t bite.    But, a quick search says this is at least 80% cap related. They have No cap space and save 8 or 9 million with releasing him.  He has been a captain his entire time there. 145 tackles this year.  They are picking 5th with a new staff and looking at Styles. Hitting that age 30 season and had a disc issue last year that did not require surgery.  I haven’t really watched him play but he activated the antennae.
    • OK, we are letting our top RB go.  We have Chuba, Etienne, and Brooks.  Imagine a player who could LEGITIMATELY play the slot and back up at RB?  I am sure he'd be a special team player as well.  I noticed him at the combine, and thought, "Here is a late rounder who could stand out as a slot and provide depth at RB. Without further ado....(I know one Huddler who might be able to tell us more about this guy): Navy running back/wide receiver Eli Heidenreich headlined the 2026 NFL Combine for the Midshipmen, running an official 4.44-second 40-yard dash and recording 16 reps on the bench press. Recognized as a versatile, "Swiss army knife" offensive weapon, Heidenreich solidified his draft stock as a potential day three target.    Eli Heidenreich (RB/WR - Navy) 2026 Combine Performance: 6'0" 200 lbs.   40-Yard Dash: 4.44 seconds. 10-Yard Split: 1.55 seconds. Vertical Jump: 35.5 inches. Broad Jump: 10' 0". Bench Press: 16 Reps. Highlights: Showcased as a premier receiving threat from the backfield, having left Navy as the program's all-time leader in receiving yards (1,994). High character.  Smart.  Maybe, just maybe....
    • These refs are horrible.  They definitely got money on this game lol.
