Ok and to close out my plethora of bookmarked stats from week 2, here's the links to Will Bryan's week 2 Stats & Superlatives:

 

Here were just a few of the headlines.... so many great stats, snippets & factoids!

TEAM STATS

  • The Panthers held New Orleans to 128 yards, the fewest allowed in the 54-game all-time series with the Saints, and the fewest for New Orleans under head coach Sean Payton, who took over in 2006.
  • Carolina recorded four sacks and had two interceptions. The Panthers' 10 sacks in the season's first two weeks are second-most through two games in franchise history (12, 1998).
  • The Panthers held the Saints to just 48 yards on the ground with 2.8 yards per carry. 93 rush yards allowed through the first two games of a season are the fewest in franchise history.
  • Carolina's defense held the Saints to a combined 2-of-13 on third and fourth downs. On the season, Carolina's defensive third-down percentage of 25.0 is half of last year's total and ranks second-best in the NFL after Sunday's early afternoon games.

Sounds like the O-line did a better job in Week 2 in not allowing the Saints to get to Sam than in Week 1 with the Jets.

That, or Sam did a better job in getting rid of the football.

Note, I may highlight certain stats in the thread title from time to time to give attention to a certain stat.

I’ve wondered how much of the data is based on blitzing. Seems like we’re getting to the QB with only a 4 man rush.

Given that Anderson has been targeted less than most expected coming into the season given his time playing with Darnold at the Jets, and the fact that one of those targets resulted in a 56 yard TD bomb, this stat is probably just low sample size and one big outlier at this point. 

Watching the games, it feels like CMC is picking up a ton of targets for dump offs and short completions that they probably jury rigged for Anderson last season when CMC was out.  Right now Anderson seems kind of in a holding pattern production wise in that he's best used for the deep ball, but our OL is suspect to say the least holding up long enough for the deep ball to develop.  With the additions of Marshall and Arnold and CMC's return, there just are a lot more options for shorter passes.

I think with all these stats..  the Northeast media will move us up in the Power Ranking..  Maybe from 23  to ..    just a guess,  but  22..    ( sorta like that tweet of the lady on NFL Network raving about the Panthers only to have to guy say,,  " I didn't know all this "   ,   IT'S HIS F'n JOB TO KNOW THIS AND BE ON TV,,

YEAH,,  22 is  pushing it though 🤣

I could just simply be who the first two teams defense decided to double cover to take out of the game.  Without watching the game tape I couldn't say for sure but that would be my first guess. Now that DJ is showing out the opposition will now have to double the coverage on both.  I noticed NO was doubling up on DJ in the second half of that game but I didn't really notice that in the first half because I was focusing a lot of attention on out offensive line.

      I’m gonna go with C but I feel like it’s a C+ or B- I liked going receiver first and I like how we picked up a 2nd rounder next year.  I like getting a running back and Te as well.  Additionally I like how we didn’t trade up and give up a ton of picks to move up earlier in the 1st. I’m not going to complain about them taking Legette over another receiver or moving up 1 spot.  He’s not the type of prospect that I would have selected but he’s who they wanted.  So I’m not going to moan about that.  I think they did the right thing. The draft loses a few points for me in taking the RB and LB so early, and waiting so late to get a corner.  I would have liked to see corner and center addressed before RB and LB but I don’t know what their board is like to be honest.

      I still cannot figure out what kind of team the Panthers are trying to build, and frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t either.  But one thing is clear - regardless of who is in charge, the Panthers will continue to bypass drafting starting caliber centers in favor of project WRs. After rightfully cutting the struggling Bradley Bozeman, center was a glaring need coming into the draft. The team claims to be converting former guard Austin Corbett to center, who is coming off two consecutive season ending knee injuries. Corbett has experience at center, and in Madden Franchise Mode this would be a move that makes sense. But going into a critical season for the development of second year QB Bryce Young, drafting a center to grow with seemed like the prudent decision.  The selection of WR in Xavier Legette over Center prospects Jackson Powers-Johnson and Zack Frazier, means 4th year receiver Terrace Marshall Jr is likely on borrowed time and will be labeled another Panthers WR draft bust. It also signals that second year WR Jonathan Mingo could be heading that direction as well. Both receivers were drafted in favor of starting caliber centers in their respective drafts. In 2021, Terrace Marshall was selected instead of Creed Humphrey (starting C for the Chiefs) and Josh Myers (starting C for the Packers), who were selected 3 and 4 picks after the Panthers picked Marshall. In 2023, the Panthers picked Mingo ahead of Joe Tippman (starting C for the Jets), and John Michael Schmitz (starting C for the Giants).  Legette could become the next Deebo Samuel and make Panthers fans forget about the players they passed on to draft him. But history is not on the Panthers side, who continue to demonstrate the definition of insanity of doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.  And I still have no idea what kind of team they are trying to build.

      I think he will get all the time he needs to prove he is or is not going to be the future. His contract allows for that. The deciding factor will be how much will the team need to see before that decision is made. Another words, when is enough, enough for Dave and Dan? This we shall see.
