Sorry, guys, I'm out tonite. Have a pre-scheduled social obligation that only crippling myself, getting to the ER, being treated and released before the game will get me out of.... I may have to sneak an earbud on the off-side of my wife during dinner so I can listen. Don't get me wrong, she's as much a Canes fan as any of us, but there are times, if you know what I mean.

It's Whaler Night!

The Governor of Connecticut has weighed in on the Hurricanes' use of Hartford Whalers jerseys - Article - Bardown

Keep The Good Starts Going: Carolina has gotten off to strong starts in their last four contests, each time showcasing at least a strong suit of scoring early or shutting down their opposition from the get-go. One week ago today against New Jersey, more on that in a minute, they scored twice in the game's opening 5:44. Then, in the other three games, they've held New York, Vegas and Ottawa to a combined 16 shots in the opening 20 minutes.

Get It Right Back: As mentioned above these two teams met one week ago today in Newark. Carolina had a unique travel situation, as they did not partake in their usual day-before travel due to a snowstorm in Wake County. So they traveled to New Jersey the day of the game and that night things did not go their way. Teuvo Teravainen did not play due to a lower-body injury and the group as a whole defensively was not very strong, as they'd allow seven goals over the course of the night. Fortunately for Carolina they don't have to wait long to try and avenge their loss though.

Working Overtime: In both of their last two games played the Canes have needed more than regulation to get the job done, taking down Vegas in overtime on Tuesday and then winning their first shootout of the year over Ottawa on Thursday.

Fantastic Freddie: Canes All-Star netminder Frederik Andersen has been the star of the show lately. He is 12-1 in his last 13 outings, ranks second in goals against average (GAA) with his 2.06, tied for second in wins with his 23, third in save percentage (SV%) with .927.

Additional Notes:

Milestone Watch: Brady Skjei will play in his 100th game as a Hurricane tonight. Derek Stepan is two points shy of 500 for his NHL career.

I like starting Raanta tonight because they'll need a stout Freddie in net tomorrow in the back-to-back.

Agreed. I’d rather have Freddy vs. the Sharks who still have some fight left in them. Hopefully Raanta will be just that much better he doesn’t give up 7 goals…

    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
