Once And For All (Batted Passes)

Baker had 5 batted passes in his last game for Cleveland (against the Steelers)… are we going to blame our OL for that as well…

I see two issues:

1) The trajectory of the ball is coming out way to low because of his arm angle, at this point that’s not something that’s going to be fixed.

2) Mayfield is not a good fit for the offense McAdoo wants to run. McAdoo wants to get the ball out quick and a lot of these batted passes are coming on plays where Baker already knows where he is going with the ball pre-snap, I’ve seen a few where he doesn’t even drop back… it’s just set and throw (then the football gets spiked back in his face).

Additionally, Baker has one of the worst (and I think it is the worst) air yards per attempt in the NFL this year, that’s on McAdoo… you have a smaller QB throwing the majority of his routes at no more than 10 yards down the field. For a guy who has a low trajectory on his passes already, that does him absolutely no favors.

It’s also obvious that Baker needs an extended drop back, preferably 5 steps. Watch him from his time in Cleveland, a lot of his drop backs were extended.

If McAdoo doesn’t change things up then this will continue to happen.

Yet no mention of the playcalling factoring?

we are too RPO heavy, to short and to the outside heavy.  They require a certain throw.  Defenders know what is coming way too often. They can see the QB.  The OL can’t.   The timing gets easy.

It's this.  A bulk of the blame has to go on playcalling.

And yeah, Baker's stature might play a part in it, no doubt...  but, as I mentioned elsewhere, explain Cam's Miami game last year where he had like 5 batted passes at the LOS.  I can't recall him ever having more than 2 in a game before.  Nothing ever memorable enough to be a problem or emblazoned in memory until that Miami game.

Then check the post game pressers on multiple games so far this year where Rhule admitted defenses either took away the pass or batted the ball on a key play late and he admits, we were trying to run an RPO.  Check the tape.  He's admitted it at least twice this year, possibly at least 3 times...

Which leads me back to playcalling.  John Ellis also pointed out that vs the Cards, Watt stopped his rush on the 4th down play because he recognized the formation or setup or whatever it was, adjusted his angle, and just waited in the passing lane and deflected it.  Now back to Cam against Miami.  As we know, Cam is 6'5", and we saw his body of work before Rhule.  Deflections have nothing to do with arm strength, for those that want to question that.  Nothing about Cam changed that would increase his chances of having passes batted at the LOS.  But what did change since we last saw him?  Rhule.  And we have now seen batted balls being an issue for at least two years.  What have we heard most often from opponents about of system, both offensively and defensively?  It's "college stuff."  What is a staple of college in offense?  RPOs.  What had Rhule admitted in pressers that we run incessantly this year, often citing because it worked earlier in the game?  RPOs.  And then you have Orlovsky's discovery about the alignment.  Teams know what we're doing before we do it.  Deflections are about timing and anticipation, so if they did it to Cam, they knew what was coming.  I called it during that game last year that it seemed so weird and unbelievable that a team would be able to deflect that many passes of him at the LOS.  The only thing I could figure is they knew what was coming and where the passes were going to.  And the more time that has passed since, especially what we've seen this year, proves exactly that.  With Baker, it's even more exacerbated because of his height, but we're running the same exact poo.  Honestly, we were prolly running it a ton with Teddy but teams hadn't had all the film on us yet.  Notice the struggles that started about a year to a year and a half in under Rhule.  They've figured him out.  McAdoodoo is an idiot, but the foundation of the offense is Rhule's...  and teams know what is coming and when it is coming, and when its an RPO, they take away the quick read/pass option and the DLinemen stop their rush and attempt the deflection...  and Baker being 6 foot makes it all the easier to.

you can't just punch defensive linemen in the balls in the nfl, which is why offensive linemen don't do this and their coaches won't let them.

OP sounds like one of those weirdos that played a year of high school ball, sucked at it, quit because the coach was stupid, and then made fictionally hardcore elements of it his entire identity to compensate for his flagging testosterone

I played in college. I played 5 technique. The guy across from me everyday played 9 yrs in the league. And most people here have reading comprehension issues.

You start off punching near the balls. It's a feint that brings the hands down.

3 step drop playside tackle can cut.

Now Moton is hurt so that could be problematic.

But their hands shouldn't get up. Unless Baker (who sucks) hits our linemen in the back of the head I'm not putting them all on him.

Yup and we do the opposite of helping the situation by doing no pre snap motion, running CMC up the gut when he does run, we have to be super low in the play action percentage across the league. It is the BO in the DBO! Sad that the casual fans can identify the issues but the coaches are outsmarting themselves, that's why they should be fired. We haven't even gotten to Ian Thomas trying to block DE's 1v1 lol

Don’t think it matters if it’s illegal or not, cut blocks (for obvious reasons) aren’t practiced and as mentioned before they are heavily frowned upon. I can guarantee you that if we start cutting down other teams tackles and ends, they will do the same to Burns, Brown, etc.

Cut blocks are just unsafe for both parties, I’ve seen instances where the OL don’t do them properly and get kneed in the head, not to mention the obvious damage that it can do to a defensive linemen. Most linemen simply won’t do them and I don’t blame them.

    • No, he has a long way to go to be that--I think he is probably referring to his ceiling--I think Legette has more room to grow from where he is that those more polished WRs.  When you look at his potential, it presents an argument that is not so one sided.  Of those three, only Odunze had a higher RAS score 9.92.  XL had a 9.90.  Malik Nabors had a 9.67.  Harrison Jr.  did not have one.  I am not sure that Legette has not overcome more obstacles to be where he is, and if you consider his adversity, his story might be more incredible, even though he is only a second tier rookie right nowm with Mitchell, Thomas, Pearsall, and maybe McConkey.  I am going from memory-but you have to think of things as a kid-when he was 16, his mother died of breast cancer.  When he entered S Carolina, his father died.  They had some issues and QB problems and the OL was terrible in Columbia---the others you mentioned?  None of that family drama, and they played at Washington, Ohio State, and LSU.  Huge difference.  I am proud of him as a man--when all his chips were on the table--when he had no more chances, he broke through and became a first round draft pick.  A school with a losing record, mediocre QB, and bad OL.  Mentally, he was struggling through the losses of both parents.  Amazing story.  Is he as good as those three who played at top universities?  Not yet.
    • Nice contribution.  Appreciate it. I have seen him on interviews, and I just like the kid.  He breaks so many molds and stereotypes, I doubt trying to put a label on his is going to work.  I think he can be special.  During his presser he was talking about riding horses and doing wildlife stuff.  This came to mind:  Lil Nas XL
