Also from that Athletic article, growing belief in the league that Payton doesn't lead for the Broncos job.

Makes me think he finally agreed to meet them for leverage purposes with Carolina to make sure he gets the 20m a year deal he wants.

I’m sorry I’m not bright, are you saying that they are saying we are in the lead?

If that's what he wants, ain't no way Tepper ponies that up after overpaying for Rhule and how that turned out.  His pride is hurt.  Sure, Payton is about as sure of a thing as there's out there that we interviewed, but you just can't take that monetary risk again.

Either that or going back to fox. Kinda a coin flip that I'm leaning toward Carolina with Arizona being a ploy to make Carolina move to hire him.

I don't think Denver was a serious choice because of the contract Wilson had and the fact they won't make Patton give up control as gm.

It was known from the start he was wanting 20-25m a season.

Damn.  Even for me personally who really likes the idea of hiring him, kind of sours on the idea of paying that PLUS the picks we'd give up.  Damn that's steep.  But, again, I feel like it's about as sure of a thing as you can get, so I could accept it if it happened.

Coach salary doesn't matter, comes out of Tepper's pocket and it's not like it affects the salary cap.

$20 million is high, but it's not insane compared to other top coaches. Belichick makes $20m, Carroll $15m, McVay $14m, etc.

They've never said that.

In fact, it was reported that Paton won't be included in the next round of interviews. It's set to be ownership only.

I mean, yes and no. At 20m even for 7 years, that’s a $76m bigger risk than before. Big number, but it’s about 0.69% of DTs net worth.

    • You're assuming just as well.   Morgan and Canales were hired 3 days apart.  I believe it was partially due to their connections in Seattle.  i believe Tepper wanted some familiarity with his GM and HC.  It is so easy to sit back and arm-chair QB over draft picks.  You don't know what the philosophy was going into the 2024 draft.  I believe Canales and Morgan were drafting for the future.  XL and Brooks point to that philosophy. Name me one GM that is 100% on draft picks.  Just one.  You're not going to find one.    I think year one picks weren't for what can you do for me now but Potential.   XL hasn't lived up to the hype of a 1st rounder.  I think we all can agree on that. However, there still is hope he comes around.  What I believe they saw in him was his speed after the catch.  He needs to get more consistent but when he gets the ball you kind of hold your breath just a second because if he gets free, he's gone.  The Brooks pick was a signing for the future, and no one could have guessed he would re-injure the same ACL.  This makes the pick look bad but Dallas was ready to draft him later that same round.  IMO we'll have to see what happens next season before we can call this a bust. Wallace has improved each season and for a third rounder has done well.  Sanders has shown flashes and considering the pick in the 4th round it wasn't a bad pick.  His sophomore season IMO was a little bit more productive.  Smith-Wade has been a good addition and has played well.  For a 5th round pick to get as much playing time as he has.  Most picks below round 3 should take a couple of years to get up to speed.  He's been a decent player.  Crumedy, no comment We turned Barrett into Jackson.  This was an amazing move and basically got a starting CB for a 7th round pick.  Pretty shrewd if you ask me. Coker, maybe the best Free Agent signing of the 2024 draft class. So, in short, you can't say that the draft was a bust.  It isn't a home run but all but one are still on the team and outside of Brooks have made contributions to wins.  2025 draft class has been much better with almost every pick making contributions this season.  Now take Fitterer's two years and compare them to Morgan and tell me that they have the same philosophy.
    • He hasn’t led crap, he’s on loaded teams and a piece of the puzzle. And he’s he has improved drastically but it took the ultimate QB whispers in Shanahan and KOC. You put him on this Panther team and he’s back to normal Darnold
    • Slavin and Jarvis week to week. Florida cheap shots took out our two best players.  I’d start KK so he can beat the brakes off someone.
