“I think that Bryce Young is a better quarterback,” Thomas said at his Ten58 Sports Bar & Lounge on Thursday. “And the reason why I say that — as you guys can see — Ten58 is based on my time at (the University of) Georgia. So, I’m partial to SEC guys. I got to watch Bryce Young play a lot, and he’s a guy that played against NFL competition almost every week. When you think about the number of guys that are drafted out of the SEC, and that go on to have really good, successful careers — I think Bryce Young, he’s going to be more suited, ready and molded to be prepared to play on Day 1.”

Davis — who spent 14 of his 16 NFL seasons in Carolina — doesn’t think Young’s undersized stature (5-foot-10 and 204 pounds) is a problem. Davis played against former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees for the majority of his career. Brees turned out to be an All-Pro talent at 6-foot and 209 pounds.

“People keep talking about this size thing,” Davis said. “One thing that has been completely dispelled — Drew Brees is a Hall of Fame (caliber) quarterback. I watched him from the other side of the field get it done time in and time out. So, there’s no issues when it comes to being short. You think about being more frail — I think in the NFL, you can’t even land hard on quarterbacks anymore anyway or it’s a penalty. So, that’s not going to be a big issue. . . . Expect Bryce Young to be, possibly, the No. 1 pick.”

Along with the Panthers’ need at quarterback, Davis has some other ideas for Carolina’s draft plans. “I think with the loss of DJ Moore, you’ve got to do something at the wide receiver spot,” Davis said. “You’ve got to do something opposite (pass rusher) Brian Burns, when it comes to getting after the quarterback. So, those are areas of need, that first and foremost, we have to address. I feel like we made a huge step last year with the offensive line — having that continuity — drafting Icky (Ekwonu). He turned out to be a really, really good draft pick, and he’s only going to continue to get better. So, I think, without a doubt, you add another wide receiver, you add some (pass) rush help, and we’re on our way.”

 “For me, it’s all about getting the fan base excited,” Davis said. “People are going to be excited about the Knights game, they’re going to be excited about what the Panthers are getting ready to do with this draft, and to be the start of that — it’s an amazing opportunity for me, and I’m really looking forward to that. I want to make sure I’m doing it in the right way.”

But it doesn’t happen routinely. It’s now a one per game as opposed to 10+ per game.  Frequency matters.

Quite true.

It's like in court when they say "the jury will disregard" something. You still heard it, and you're not going to just forget it.

And as we seen in the season opener against Denver in 2016, some defenses are like we are going to take our chances, make them call it every time. I could see teams taking their shots at Bryce to send a message, especially if he is out there carving them up and making splash plays.

Absolutely.

Every team tries to hit the quarterback, but there are certain teams for whom I would say doing physical damage to them is...encouraged.

(the Saints are definitely not the only dirty team)

And yes, you have to take that kind of thing into account when you're looking at Young.

I agree with the point. With that said though, there's a reason why Chris Simms spends his time talking to Mike Florio rather than quarterbacking on a football field.

The durability concerns are most definitely real.

I wont argue against durability... but if a player has no history of injuries... you shouldn't be of the mindset... welll.. he could get injured... so pass... if there is no history of nagging injury issues.

      Yes I agree, the future RT could easily be christ. When he shocking re-signed here for the cheap, he said part of the reason was the OL coaching staff.  I've already thought too much about 2026. The RT has all the options, including resigning Motown. I was never a big fan, but he's solid and peptides and stem cells can fix a gippy knee. If he makes it though this year and wants to return, why not for 2 years 16 million?? Or like you said give the job to Christ or draft your RT...... that I feel is the best current method. With both OGs in the 20 million per cap range and Icky......ooooooooooo boy he could be the first 30 million per OLmen in NFL history. That's a huge portion of cap space for the OL, which I agree with, but in order to offset those 20 and 30 million deals... you need cheap rookie contracts. (unless Motown would take a huge pay cut and whoever the C will be).  This is the deepest OL I can recall in Panthers history.  I believe Morgan should try and trade either Kingston or Zavala.  I didn't even talk about Yosh, Tarquin, or Walton. Yosh is same age as christ and why not him as RT after good swing tackle years? Tarquin is a UDFA on the prayer program, 150,000 in guarantees and why not him in 2026? Walton seems to be a OL coach favorite, he followed the Tampa Bay staff here after 2 years there and add in one year here, he's stuck around for some reason. I think they need to spend very light on RT and Panthers have lots of options, I love it.
