2023 Off-Season Thread

With the TDA signing, we only have $850K in cap space which is basically what you want to leave for call up’s in case of injuries.

The Canes current roster is:

Bunting - Aho - Teravainen

Svechnikov - Kotkaniemi - Necas

Martinook - Staal - Fast

Noesen - Drury - Jarvis

Lemieux

Slavin - Burns

Orlov - Pesce

Skjei - Chatfield

Coghlan - DeAngelo

Andersen

Raanta

Kochetkov

Technically I’m one over right now but Svech is unlikely to be ready by the start of the season. Ponomarev or Rees could also see some time with the big club this year.

Until Svech comes back, I could see Noesen moving into his spot and Lemieux alongside Drury and Jarvis.

Slavin - Burns

Orlov - ?

Skjei - Chatfield

Pesce, DeAngelo, Coghlan are all RDs, so.....

If Pesce gets moved, I could see Chatty moving to the second pair with Orlov, and TDA getting paired with Skjei.

Regardless, I think the guy who gets screwed in the end is Brady Skjei. He either drops to the 3rd pair and/or he gets paired with TDA and has to pick up the slack. And he's in a contract year. I watched the playoffs again the other day when the NHL Network showed the 90 minute versions of the NY Islanders series, and Brady Skjei had a very good post season. He didn't make many mistakes and you never saw him get caught out of position. He's a solid second pair d-man and I think the Canes need to lock him up for another 3-4 years. He's got a NTC in his contract as well.

Is it me or does it feel like extending Aho was probably the last move before TC?

no.

Probably still looking to move Pesce and I'd think Tarasenko's open market value is a similar story to the Sharks overvaluing EK--if the agents and Sharks were gonna get their asking price it would have happened already.  We're just slow playing to not give up too much/pay too much, but also still willing to talk w teams regarding Pesce in the meantime.  Plenty time left.

Mmm I’ve of the opinion if it was going to happen it would have already happened.

i mean. VT isn't on a team. he will be on a team. the sharks could wait til trade deadline for EK but good luck to them if they do--he will be much cheaper then and we'll be just fine in the meantime

You're right, to a point. The downside for the Sharks is if nothing happens and EK plays the season in a Sharks sweater. They will end up retaining more of his $11.5M AAV the longer this goes on. And, let's not forget, EK is under contract thru the 2026-27 season.

Sure, the Sharks have over $5M in cap space, but if we're being honest, their roster is pretty weak. Although I'd take Oskar Lindblom and Anthony Duclair on the Canes any day, the fact is Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture aren't playing up to their salaries.

The Sharks need to move EK to clear more cap space and get some scoring up front- bottom line.

    • The good news is that we are pretty uniquely well established to address all of our needs this season. We have $14m real cap space, and something like $40m in trade deadline cap space. Not sure exactly how that works out. But, we have the room to absorb any bad contracts. With recent rule changes regarding retention, that went into effect this season, we now have a huge advantage in the trade market.  On top of that, while we do have obvious needs, we also have a glut of talent in certain areas that we struggle to find ice time for. We are over-stocked on scrappy talented lil-guys, strong defensively sound 3rd liners and shutdown left shot dmen. Whether it's a package or separate deals, idk. But, one of each from Stank/Blake/Nads, Erob/Carrier/KK/Jank, and Walker/Nystrom; throw in some 1st round picks (and frankly any other prospects they want) and we should be able to come out with a 1b to pair with Bussi and either a 2c with size or a 2c and size.   TL/DR We got the money, you got the stuff?
    • I don’t  think 6’4 was ever considered small or undersized. Baby hands tho, yes that was his thing That’s an interesting idea, like an optical illusion? Sounds like you have personal experience with this!
    • in the 25' draft the Carolina Panthers had hired Brandt Tillis someone who actually understood how to build a successful team & build through the draft .  this team was yes mismanaged for years prior to Brandt Tillis joining the team in 25' & rarely done anything right in the draft outside occaionaly getting lucky on an UDFA such as Jalen Coker who's dad coincidentally happened to be a huge Carolina Panthers fan, hint hint  ...just saying
