vegas doesnt guess, its based on facts and metrics, they have been pretty spot on in regards to us for the past 3ish years.   So I keep telling all the guys that think we are winning the south put your money where your mouth is, its right there, 7 wins

Vegas doesnt use facts and the only metric they use is money. their goal is to have equal number of people on the over and the under so they can collect the vig. They set a line not based on facts or what they think will happen but on what they think other people will think will happen. So at 7.5 Vegas thinks there will be an equal number of people who think the Panthers will win 8 or more games as they do people who think they will win 7 or fewers games.

Well said. All they care about is making money, not being right.

pretty simple stuff right here:

Opening season spreads (bets made before season starts):

As you can see, it is all over the place, and there is no tight pattern or tight trend line showing that Vegas is right.

Now compare it to the final season spreads (betting made midseason-end season):

Trend line is evident and house wins.

Early season gambling is the best point in the season for people to gamble, Vegas doesnt have the data yet to support their spreads.... That's why taking bets on the whether a team beats their record prediction, wins their division, wins a playoff game, goes to the super bowl, and wins the super bowl are the ones we hear big stories about toward the end of the season. It's the one chance we as gamblers have an even playing field with Vegas.

I believe he was saying preseason Vegas win totals were an accurate prediction not how money is placed. Betters try to make money going against the grain.

doing the math in my head off my phone it looks like 15 teams went over

2.5

1.5

.5

2.5

1.5

2.5

2.5

3.5 KC

.5

3,5 Vike

1.5

1.5

4.5 Eagles

3.5

I will double check the math when I get back but that appears they average for the 15 teams over is 2.3.   So slightly less then half the league went over for an average of 2 extra wins.   So I would say A)Vegas is pretty good at this and B) my overall general statement even if we beat the expectations and we fall to the average its going to be really hard to win the division or make the wild card.  COuld it happen sure, do the stats and historical performances match up.  Nope

I hope I am wrong but I have watched this team far too long for them to surprise me in a positive way

Edit to say:  The 3 teams that went over 3 wins were 3 of the best teams in the 2022 regular season

Vegas doesnt set the ceiling... you know being under means they are wrong too, right? Why are you just counting the overs? Gambling goes both under/over....

Again setting in a parking lot and trying to do the math, it looks like 15 teams went under for 33 total an average of 2.2.  Pretty close to the over

And I thought this entire discussion was how vegas viewed us and may have to happen in regards to the expectations for us to win the division or win the wild card.

I am not married to these numbers so they could be wrong and I will double check once I get a bigger screen and a calculator.   But it seems the average of how vegas is right/wrong is around 2 wins either direction.  Still pretty damn good for 32 teams in my book.

    • We're in alignment regarding Thielen not being a game changer/breaker for the Panthers. Getting the ball into hands of playmakers like TMac and XL is going to open up things more than it is getting it to Thielen underneath (or letting him go after 50/50 balls 20yds downfield in his mid-30s). However, in a room where the other guys are two second year guys and two rookies, having a reliable vet that they can learn from is just as important as it is for the QB to have as a reliable third option. I can see that being worth $8.5M (just 3%) of the $279.2M cap... especially when looking at what's left out there: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/_/position/wr However, the idea that the team is forcing production to Thielen and leading to losses isn't supported by the data. Targets, not receiving yards, are how you can tell if a player is being "force fed." In the two games mentioned, let's look at the other players available... vs. TB 10 targets - Adam Thielen 9 targets - David Moore 8 targets - Tommy Tremble, Xavier Legette 3 targets - Jonathon Brooks 1 target - Dan Chisena, Feleipe Franks, Stephen Sullivan vs. PHI 11 targets - Adam Thielen 8 targets - Xavier Legette 5 targets - Chuba Hubbard, David Moore 2 targets - Tommy Tremble 1 target - Ja'Tavion Sanders, Deven Thompkins There isn't exactly a bounty of other names to throw the ball to. In those games, AT was one of the top 2 WRs. Diontae had been gone by that point.   So... yea. Agreed that Thielen isn't exactly carrying the team in his mid-30s, but it's undeniable that he was the most reliable target last season that still has quite a bit of value this season. Whether or not that value is reflected in a manner folks think on the contract is going to come down to personal taste. However, the idea that the team was forcing production to AT and that was the reason behind some losses couldn't be further from the truth.
    • I would also add that I think it's more than money.  AT has looked absolutely miserable out there at times, and there was a lot of speculation he would demand to be traded.  Personally, I thought he was a lock to be moved last year.  Maybe his hamstring is the only thing that prevents that from happening. The fact that he's not only willing to come back and play, but excited about it, really bodes well for Bryce.  AT is a veteran and he knows the game.  If he didn't have confidence in Bryce, I guarantee you he wouldn't be in a Panther uniform this year.  I'll take that as a positive.
