REPORT: Panthers and Brian Burns not at all close to extension

It’s wild how we go from constantly paying positions that should not get big deals, then fug the layup extensions. We pay RB’s all day long, but a young superstar like Burns gets pissed at us and decide to hold out the week before our first game. It’s unreal. It’s not like we have a single player at his level on our team to rush the QB, but we decide to turn down a haul of picks and then get into a state off with the guy.

Gets pissed at us because we won't cave and give him a $30mil extension?

I'm all about maximize your megadeal, but be realistic.

What’s the end game here? He holds out a few games until finally caving? If he holds out all year, he loses $16 mill and his 5th year contract just starts over next year.

Maybe we get a second shot at trading him?

I think he knows he has to play eventually so he will play on Sunday.

Who knows. The guy shows up at camp pounding his chest that he needs to be here with his brothers and then immediately walks that back right when it matters.

Ah the Burns hate grows. Man this place is like Middle School. That kid is doing something I don't like. Quick let's do something stupid to him. That'll show him.

I don't see any hate in here. Just stating the facts that he walked back his previous statements and is not worth the contract he is (reportedly) demanding.

I want this deal done and want Burns on this team....but not at $30 million per year because he simply isn't worth that price tag.

He has never said 30 a year, that’s speculation at this point. This is his value per year if his main comp is Max Crosby, which I would value him higher than. This is not considering the major increase in cap coming up. We can pay people like Chosen Anderson to not even play for us and no one blinks an eye, but we piss off our main core Defensive talent over a few mill per year. We knew what his salary expectations were last year when we turned down all of the picks offered to trade him. We as a team have made zero progress since then on a new contract and that’s not on Burns, it’s on our organization. We have been eating dead cap for years now signing bums (Darnold…..enough said) but we flip out over paying a double digit all pro DE who is 25 years old?

    • Good, our ST is almost as bad as our ILB depth!
    • With two starters on expiring contracts (Moton + Corbett) as well as a few back-ups (Christensen, Mays, and Nijman), the Panthers are likely going to have to reinvest in the OL after this coming season. Icky's fifth-year option was picked up by the team this offseason while Lewis and Hunt both remain under contract then (though Lewis' deal is set-up in a way that would let Carolina move on from him then as well). I think that the team is going to be looking at investing a premium pick at RT should Bryce's development continue, and might even look to double dip at the position in order to have a swing tackle that can also kick inside when needed. There's also the question of starting center... Prospects I'm watching this upcoming college season... Centers Jake Slaughter (Florida) Iapani Laloulu (Oregon) Connor Lew (Auburn) Logan Jones (Iowa) Parker Brailsford (Alabama) Connor Tollison (Missouri) Bryce Foster (Kentucky) Pat Coogan Notre Dame) Raheem Anderson (Michigan) Carson Hinzman (Ohio State) RTs Francis Mauigoa (Miami) Kadyn Proctor (Alabama) Spencer Fano (Utah) Gennings Dunker (Iowa) Blake Miller (Clemson) Isaiah World (Oregon) Caleb Tiernan (Northwestern) Monroe Feeling (Georgia) Earnest Greene III (Georgia) Monroe Mills (Louisville) Charles Jagusah (Notre Dame) Tree Babalade (South Carolina) Trey Zuhn III (Texas A&M) Nolan Rucci (Penn State) Tristan Leigh (Clemson) Fernando Carmona (Arkansas) JC Davis (Illinois) Riley Mahlman (Wisconsin) PJ Williams (SMU) Tosh Baker (Notre Dame) Aki Ogunbiyi (Texas A&M) Courtland Ford (Kentucky) Ethan Onianwa (Rice)
    • I watched documentary on the 2010 Auburn season and Cam wasn’t included in that either. I think he just doesn’t care for these things
