It doesn't matter.  That's a sunk cost at this point and making another mistake to make up for an old one is twice as bad.  Our team is in no position to offer any player $30 million a year.  We have holes and need depth.

It absolutely matters as fitt has to explain to everyone and more importantly tepper why its a sunk cost.  Fitt just doesnt recover from that.  He would be public enemy #1 and would never live that down.  He knows in his heart of hearts he cannot trade burns unless the package is crazy.

IMO his best and most realistic option is call the bengals and see whats what.

So essentially a bottom of rd 1 pick and a 3rd string RB.

Yeah a first (it will be a late first because only a contender would trade) middle pick (or swap later for early) and a depth player (who honestly would get playing time if you make it an Edge or LB or CB).  That should be the minimum IMO, but hopefully something better.  Getting back that 1st would be huge plus whatever else we can squeeze.  We have to build around Bryce for the time being.

And again.

are the Bengals (a team that’s shopping Higgins because money and their cap situation after paying Burrow and Chase coming up). Are they going to want to pay for a edge rusher that’s made it known by now he wants 28-30 mil

If they can make it work and if he is viewed as a missing piece then yeah.  Teams do that.  But I dont follow the bengals other then know burrow is hurt but I am not familiar with their needs on defense.  Recouping some value for higgins other then letting him walk has to be a priority for them

again scott has to do due diligence and call

The Bengals can't afford him plus Burrow's health is questionable right now.  They might not be in the playoff race if Burrow can't get healthy (you know since he tried playing through a calf injury).

If we keep losing we need to be in sell mode with Burns being top of the list as he can get the best return and would cost the most money to extend.  Not accepting the Rams deal sucks, but it can't be undone.

So you get that 1st back

and your edge/DE room consists of DJ Johnson and Barno.  Are you using that 1st from Burns to draft a edge.  Or draft a WR and get a couple of Marquis Haynes level guys as your starting edge rushers?

I just know that they Want to keep both Chase and Higgins.  And have even thrown around the idea of tagging Higgins to hold onto him.

But most who cover the team expect him to be traded strictly due to $$.

And yes.  Scott should at least make a call.  But just don’t see it happening knowing they are moving off a offensive weapon they want to keep because of $$ and the cap.

Barno, Johnson, Houston, YGM for the rest of the year plus Haynes when he returns.  If YGM keeps looking better he might be a cheap extension for depth.  Then yeah you look at an older vet pass rushers to hold down the spot or draft one in rounds 2-3.  $30 million allocated to Burns would make it too hard to fill all of our holes and depth needed.  If we can flip Burns we should have a lot of cap space to sign some decent FAs plus you get the first back plus a depth player and better pick in the draft.

Problem is

out of all those guys you listed.

only Johnson and Barno are under contract next season.

YGM and Haynes would be tough to re-sign?

Are you signing them as intention as your 2 starters.

I know YGM has had 1.5 games of looking good this year.
But are you wanting a guy who was on the verge of being cut coming out of camp as your full time starter beyond this year on a smaller extension?

Burns has been almost nonexistent since the opening quarter in Atlanta where he posted two sacks.  The past couple of games: 6 tackles (3 solo and 3 assists) and one sack.  Luvu has .5 less in sacks but 5 more tackles.  His contract is nowhere near Burns, but producing comparably.

I love Luuvu and hope he is here pst this season.

But I know of at least 1 sack he got last week was a direct result of Carr stepping up to avoid Burns and stepped right into Luuvu for the Sack.
In addition, how many sacks do you see him to continue from that LB if Evero leaves and a new DC comes in?  Is a new DC going to utilize him in those exotic blitzes?

    • Former league executive and current NFL.com analyst Marc Ross recently named his top second-year breakout candidates for the upcoming campaign. Ross includes Legette, who may be helped out by his team's latest first-round selection. He writes: Legette had a slow start to his NFL career, catching 49 passes for 497 yards and four touchdowns last season. Some of the struggles can be tied to his own growing pains -- he had eight drops on 81 targets, according to Pro Football Focus -- but he had also had to navigate the quarterback shuffle between Bryce Young and Andy Dalton early in Dave Canales' first season leading the Panthers. Canales recently said he believes Carolina has a DK Metcalf-like talent in Legette, who had foot surgery this offseason but was cleared to resume work in early April, and that having a full offseason alongside Young, who took a significant step forward in 2024, could lead to a breakout result in 2025. I anticipate it will also help that Carolina invested another first-round pick in a wide receiver, Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan, to complement Legette in the pass game. McMillan's presence, however, could take some pressure off Legette—who may be able to roam around in a more natural playmaking role. With the 6-foot-4 All-American likely to take on the bulk of the volume from Young, Legette should have some cleaner shots to break out downfield and in the box score.     https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/panthers/2025/05/06/panthers-wr-xaiver-legette-top-breakout-candidates-2025/83475176007/?taid=681a4610ede05d000149b376&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=trueanthem&utm_source=twitter
    • my understanding is a big time throw, could be a 5-10 yard slant to Adam Thielen given AT isn't going to separate.
