Panthers Players Being Impersonated

Panthers director of security Gene Brown just briefed reporters on a series of recent incidents in which someone's impersonating Panthers LT Travelle Wharton and scamming them out of money.

The problems began last December, when an Atlanta area woman contacted the Panthers claiming Wharton had bilked her out of $5,300. Since then, several other such claims have been made, with Brown estimating losses around $25,000.

Wharton said it was frustrating having people using his name in such a way -- with many of the incidents in stirp clubs -- especially given the lengths he's gone to to present a positive image.

"It is (frustrating)," Wharton said. "I don't even go nowhere."

Team officials said there were a series of similar incidents last year involving someone impersonating safety Charles Godfrey.

Brown said the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the Pineville Police Depeartment and NFL Security were investigating, and there was a suspect, but no arrests have been made.

Team officials said if anyone's approached by someone claiming to be a player, they should contact the team immediately.

"Our players don't raise money this way," Brown said.

# This isn't the 1st time an impersonator has tried to act like one of the Panthers lately. They say Charles Godfrey was a target last year.

- Wharton have been trying to get the matter resolved, but they're frustrated that nothing's happened yet & want to get word out.

-Panthers security estimates the man impersonating Wharton has scammed 4 or 5 victims out of about $25,000.

my sister was at some club downtown last year, and was supposedly hanging out with Jarrett...i told her it probably wasn't him, and she put me on the phone with him, i asked who the backup QB was at USC when he was there, and he couldn't answer.....

This year too. Sherrod Martin has dressed in his uniform the past few games.

Actually, I'd say not knowing the answer to something makes it more likely that it really was Jarrett.

    • No saying he mostly sucks is saying that he doesn’t suck the minority of the time.   Like if he took 17 tests and had a couple of really good showings and a handful of pretty good scores sprinkled in among the typical sub par results.   Like a golfer who went out and shot an 89.  There will be some real nice shots sprinkled in there but at the end of the day it is still 89.
    • It's worth mentioning... Game 1: Oct 11 in Raleigh. 4-3 OT win with a complete starting lineup. Game 2: Dec 13 in Philly. 4-3 SO win without Jaccob Slavin. Game 3: Dec 14 in Raleigh. 3-2 SO win with a complete starting lineup. Game 4: Apr 13 in Philly. 3-2 SO loss with the AHL roster.  Those early season games were no indication of the Canes team that finished the season. Miller and Ehlers were still trying to figure things out, Nikishin was still a work in progress and the Stankoven line was just another line. Make no mistake, the Canes team Philly will see is nothing close to what they saw at any point in the season. If the top line starts producing, Freddie stays hot and the blue line does what it does, this could be a sweep as well.
