The Fox regime has been pretty good about not letting good players leave

Dante Wesley came back & is doing very well for us. Grease man indeed. See 1st Bucs 2009 game.

Terry Cousin left in 2004 but came back & played ST/safety well until he retired. Now does sports commentary for the Fox tv station in Charlotte.

Mark Jones would be with us if he had passed his physical. Once he healed, he re-signed with TN.

You missed the "Predator" who cut his hair and last I knew was with Houston doing well.

There was also a fullback that we cut that is a starter for TN. Casey Cramer?

Taye Biddle who is now a NY Giant. Met him, upstanding young man. Fast as hell.

Just off the top of my head. There's many more, I'm sure. These here probably would be remembered by fans, even Huddle members.

Biddle has not appeared since leaving us and is no longer on the Giants roster, Cramer has had momentary appearances but has been missing since 2008.

As established Pred is out of the league.

good point. Also: keep in mind some of our more harmful cuts - Haye, Brown, Jarrett Bush (OK, not that damn harmful but we scrambled for corners for a while), these guys were guys who were in camp and we just didn't have that much room.

I did like Casey Cramer as well. Can't remember if we got him out at camp or just let him go.

So some of this is a matter of "we can't fit him on the roster" - in the Brown/Haye example I'll go as far as to say we tried to roster too many DL in an attempt to trade a guy away, and then just kept the immediate guy instead of the long term guy.

Not keeping Mark Jones was a mistake.
how? he was good because of the now illegal wedge. he got cut in training camp in tennessee. problems with the return game we had wasn't because of him being gone.

we actually brought him in and he couldn't pass the physical.

mistake? not really.

If I remember correctly we brought him in when we had all those Injuries at RB and Hoover was even out. Hes decent but when you have Hoover I don't see the need to have another FB on the roster until he is injured.

I hate having 2 FB unless the backup can contribute in other areas (RB, big Special Teams contribution, etc). I also hate using anything higher then 6th when FBs are a dime a dozen as UDFA.

Witherspoon was a dumb move. So were the cutting of Tony Brown and Haye. But all in all they are in the better part of the league at keeping the good players in Black and Blue.

As others have said and will continue to say, Fox's main fault is knowing when to Sit em'. I have said for a while now get Fox a good QB (I believe we have one in Moore) and a good D and he can be great. Jake led us to the SB in his 1st full season as starter, maybe lightning can strike twice in the spot.

When I looked at Fox (and Hurney's) tenure a while back, my take was that he'd been okay on his choices of who to keep and who to let go. His biggest mistakes to me have come when he's decided who to make a "core" player. Obviously right now, the biggest of those issues is the blockbuster Delhomme extension.

he was definitely brought in mid-2004. My question was when he was let go - whether it was a "don't re-sign him" or "we don't need to have him in our top 53" decision. I couldn't remember.

I think the guys do a great job of not letting good ones get away, but they also don't have a good feel for when it's time to let someone walk. Not like it's easy though.

Master that and you're basically the Patriots.

So in summary it would apear we give out contracts pretty handily, keeping the majority of our FAs and extending the players we see as core players with big contracts.

My estimation has gone down after considering that. It takes little skill to keep everyone, what seperates the truely great FOs is that they DO let people walk and the majority of the time they are proved right.

We generate a lot of dead weight via extensions as we do not want players to leave, this is sometimes forced due to no one behind that particular player, other times we extend because we believe the 'deserve' it.
