Panther not "letting" Peppers walk

NFL Executive

Recommended Posts

I just recently learned that, if next season is an uncapped year, Pep cannot simply "walk." I just learned that in an uncapped year, all free agents who made the probowl will be labeled unrestricted free-agent and any team who signs them must also compensate the team the sign them away from. Which means we really dont have to tag Pep and hope to get value for him. If anyone signs him, they automatically have to compensate us for him. This basically means that the franchise tag is only going to serve the purpose of keeping a player you dont want to leave. This is in some ways great news!

However, this also means that we cant go after free agent WRs like Vincent Jackson unless we are willing to give up draft picks. It puts a whole new spin on FA. I heard this from Adam Schefter, who is a decent source at best, but this makes sense to me. If the Panthers have decided they dont want Peppers, then let the bidding begin. As a restricted free agent, any time who signs him would have to give us a draft pick equal to the one we drafted him with (first) AND we could save loads of money!

With this in mind, I might be in favor of letting him find a new team, though I have been hoping Pep would stay with us all this time. But if we save 20+mil and gain a 1st round pick, I would be good with that. Now the question is, would anyone want to give up a 1st round pick and dish out millions to a 30-year-old DE? Perhaps this is way Pep is trying to get a deal done with us so early... maybe he is afraid that at his age he cant get the money he wants unless we dish it out to him early... otherwise he gets stuck with us for much less than he wanted.

THIS PUTS THE PANTHERS IN A WIN-WIN SITUATION WITH PEPPERS!!!

Giving evidence once again, the Top Cat knows what he is doing

if he walks, we can only get a 3rd round compensatory pick. its better than nothing, but it much rather tag and trade.

The bottom line is that if one of the best defenders in the league gets to walk away for nothing...management mishandled the situation. I'd be happy with signing some FAs with that extra money but I'm pretty convinced that after last season we could have had a 1st round pick for Pep and we didn't take it.

Everything I've read says that Peppers will not be a restricted free agent, thus declaring your post null and void. He will be unrestricted as of March 5th.

Then the smart thing to do would be to share would you have read, not be a smart ### and call the post null and void. If you know something I dont, share it.

That is not the way an NFL executive would talk to a fan. I call shenanigans.

Jangles is right. I have embarressed the league and my overseer Rodger Goodell. I want to apologize to the NFL, Commerssioner Goodell, and all the fans who support the sheild. I accept whatever punishment Commish Goodell sees fit and I hope that people dont develop a negative outlook on the league due to my foolish and most immature acts. I regret my decision to call @$$-clow *cough* I mean X-clown an ### and I hope he can find it in his heart to forgive me. Thank you

The problem is that you think that this forum allows for intelligent conversations. You get a couple of people that like to talk real football and then most that like to post pictures and try to get a laugh. or just try to say something shocking to try to hijack a topic

    • I presented that scenario because this is a home game and we seemed to have improved in some capacity in that area as of recently. The problem with the possibility of sweeping the Bucs is this team has had a habit of quickly falling victim to momentum shifts. The Bucs are coming off a bitter loss the same as the Panthers but the Bucs have a much better proven track record this time of year and they have performed when the pressure is on unlike our Panthers. We have a shot against the Seahawks here in BOA but that is a matchup that could quickly get out of hand because they are a well coached team and that goes back to the momentum shifts I mentioned. I just don't see this team beating the Bucs in their stadium to close the season. Tall order to say the least.
    • I’d give it another year for Sanders and Evans, I don’t much care what you do with Tremble’s spot. Let him have another year or maybe replace him. Haven’t looked at his contract so that may be the determining factor.
    • Following the crazy up down pattern we finish 9-8 with an improbable sweep of TB, and lay an egg in the home playoff game.  I don’t know if I can sign on to sweeping TB but I suppose it’s possible, they aren’t really that good this year.    ps I can buy beating TB Sunday and losing to Seattle.  Then it just gets to can you fluke one game. Any given Sunday. So we’ll see.
