Carolina Panthers to determine Julius Peppers' fate this week

Those that keep saying we should just tag and trade Peppers (media and fans alike..i.e. PY) need to understand that if we do that, it may not be as easy to trade him as you think. There are only a handful of teams that will be willing to pay Pep what he wants as it is, especially with the likelihood that there will be a lockout after this coming year. And even fewer teams that would be willing to give up a high pick as well. And the most likely one that has the resources to afford him along with the need is the Patriots, but word is that they are not willing to break the bank for him. Other than them, there are not too many teams out there who would be capable and willing to take on that cost. So the chances are that if we tag him, we'll be the ones shouldering the cost of that ridiculous tender amount.

If the Panthers simply let Peppers walk for nothing, I will stop coming to the Huddle forever, turn in my Panthers NC license plate, and sell all my Panthers memorabilia...

I got a baby on the way (should be here by Week 1, 2010) and I ain't gonna be able to keep up so much this year anyways probably...

I'm not saying it is a certainty that he gets the tag, but I hope, at worst, he tests the market and comes back... If we even let him go there and test it, it's likely the most stupid move we've ever made (including the Delhomme extension, the Gilbert trade, etc), and one that would make me lose all faith in the direction of the franchise...

I can see why Mark and Jon stepped down... We're moving in the wrong direction...

Prove me wrong, Fox and Hurney... Get the deal done NOW...

So one guy leaves and your going to abandon ship?

They're not going to pay Julius 21 million, that's ridiculous, there is no DE in the NFL worth 21 million for one season and guess what happens next year... he walks anyways.

Doesn't please me to hear myself say this, but Peppers is as good as gone.

Congratulations on the baby, but if you're that into Peppers.....Well.....Bye.

Seriously people, are you really going to cry over Peppers leaving? As some have stated in this thread, he simply isn't worth that much money. Furthermore, I am seriously getting tired of fans blaming the organization for this when they tried to lock him up long term last year by making him the HIGHEST PAID DE IN THE LEAGUE... What more does Pepper want? What more do you people want? If he isn't willing to accept that then let his greedy ass move on.

As for letting him walk for nothing, well, all I can say is that no team will want to give up draft picks and spend that much money on a DE and that includes New England.

“I wouldn’t touch him, for that money and what he gives you,’’ said an ex-Panthers personnel man. “On the field, he’s a freak athletically, but it’s whether he shows up or not. He’ll go two and three games and do nothing but take up space. Then he’ll have two sacks, a forced fumble, a pick, and change the game. And that’s the danger. He can mesmerize you, but it’s not consistent.’’

“He could end up costing some personnel guy his job,’’ said an AFC scout with extensive experience evaluating Peppers. “I’m terrified of him. In my heart of hearts, I believe that if you pay this guy, I don’t think you’ll see a double-digit sack [season] again the rest of his career.’’

And that’s where his fit gets murky.

Can a club that has built its operation on players who are passionate about football change a guy who so often has demonstrated an apathy toward the game?

“Football’s come so easy to him,’’ said Brentson Buckner, the former Panthers defensive tackle who played next to Peppers for five years. “Does he love it the way Steve Smith or Bryant Young or Jerry Rice love it? I don’t think so.

Oh so now we're bringing up Pep not signing the contract a few years ago to make him the highest paid DE and conveniently using it against him because it fits our own agenda while forgetting that Turdovac was still our DC and that after he signed the tender last summer he stated that he wanted to sign a long term contract after the fact we got new personnel on defense and a new DC, but then the FO couldn't get it done. Great, wish I could forget facts so that it'll help my arguements in every day life as well. If you're tired of people blaming the FO, get over it because they are the ones that got themselves in this mess by keeping Turdo too long and their colossal clusterf**k of the 2009 offseason.

    • PJ's completion % was 63% when starting games in Carolina.  Which I believe is better than Bryce when starting.  And again, 4-3 as the starter here and the LONE QB Carolina has been able to actually win with in the Tepper era.  If you ask a gambling gunslinger to come into blowouts.....they are going to go down in a blaze of glory.  Which he would do.  Yeah, he isn't good.  And gunslingers are supposed to have rockier stats than checkdown QBs.   So....why does PJ Walker have a better comp % as a starter than Bryce Young.  And for every knock you want to make about PJ, you can find something or a skillset that PJ does better than Bryce.   I didn't say PJ had good field vision.  He doesn't.  Tell me about Bryce after he comes off the first read lol.  Let me repeat, PJ Walker is not a good QB.  He is NFL depth and an in house arm.  Bryce Young doesn't belong in a convo w/ Jake and Cam.  He belongs closer in a convo with the backup caliber QBs Carolina was forced into playing.  Which isn't just PJ Walker.  But Kyle Allen.  Moore.  Guys like that.
    • Oh I see what you meant by memory. I will trust my memory, I have looked a a lot of those ball charts for Bryce and they trend a general pattern. They thing that has changed that I have noticed more recently is the reduction in the bunching of behind or at  the LOS passes over to his right.  Aside from the quantity of throws recently since the running game has become a more dominant factor.
    • Yes but you basically said you are going from a quick skim of those charts without doing the same for Bryce and/or Andy. So you are going memory vs. snapshots. That's not going to be a very comprehensive analysis.
