And he didn't even run a 40 leading up to the draft. No clue where they're pulling that number from and if it has any actual validity.

I'm not sure, but players get 40 timed throughout their college career, it's not just a combine thing.  That said, yes, it could be bogus if it's an unofficial number.  I trust the combine numbers over pro days, or any other event, where players get measured & timed.

Yeah, most of those reported 40 times prove to be significantly exaggerated when they actually legit run. Bryce is probably somewhere in the 4.6 to 4.7 range. They're going off his reported 4.52. I just don't see that type of speed in his play. With most reported college 40 times you're pretty safe adding a full tenth to it to get you in the ballpark.

Good thing he had a impressive 40 time.

Yeah, and Bryce is listed at 6'0" at Alabama. We now have plenty of NFL tape that shows him being chased down by defensive linemen, so there goes his elite 40 time. He had been so overhyped and oversold that I wonder if anything said about him before the draft was true. I'm even beginning to doubt he has good table manners.

I don't think Bryce has an "elite" 40 time by any means but I do think his mobility is a plus. I think he did a better job later in the season adjusting to the speed of the game with his scrambling. He was getting ran down left and right earlier in the year.

Yes, but I remember the days where we had a QB that was a threat to run and a QB sneak was a high percentage play. Mobility is nice a nice trait, but when that mobility can used against the defense and not just as it pertains to the pocket, that's even better.

Oh for sure. Bryce is never gonna be confused with Cam Newton in any way, shape, or form. Bryce can effectively scramble though. And if he can improve his threat as a passer it'll open up more scrambling opportunities.

Making this work with Bryce is gonna be all about retooling the passing game to be built around YAC. We probably need to have more rollouts too. Bryce struggles to see downfield in the pocket and is a decent thrower on the move. Get him on the move. It sucks to admit that the #1 overall pick is gonna have to be a system QB but it is what it is. Nobody will care if we're winning. Purdy is a system QB and the Niners are on the SB. I'm sure they get very sensitive about that but at the end of the day they're in the SB and right now that's all that really matters.

Realistically, he’s ranked probably around 25-27th of 32 starters in arm strength. Nothing to hide from, great play can outweigh it.

Exactly. Bryce Young will add weigh and increase his arm strength arm, which is still currently acceptable  as well as his overall strength, count on it..

Who are the starting QBs we'd honestly rank below Bryce in arm strength?

Mac Jones is probably closest and I still think his arm is probably better to be honest.

I might get some hate for this but I think he can get it to Burrow’s level. It’s nothing special but it’s good enough, especially if he can get the touch/timing down. They had similar college tape (I think Manning was the first to point this out) with obviously Burrow being a lot taller.
Burrow is interesting because he invested his first offseason strengthening his hips to get more “zip” on his passes which he was able to do.

Here is a decent read on how Burrow has made it work without an elite arm.

So we went from comparing Bryce to Manning to now comparing him to Joe Burrow. LOL!

What's next? Will Elway get some love?

I was skeptical about Burrow until I watched him against Clemson. That sold me. Burrow doesn't have an elite arm for sure. His arm is probably about average if not a bit below average for an NFL starter. But his arm is significantly better than Bryce's.

Literally the very first play of the game I was like, yep I'm done. Sold. Sell it all and go get me that guy.

Love Burrow and loved him as a prospect. That play kind of shows what I’m talking about though. He didn’t stay in the pocket and deliver a bullet. He scrambled around and lobbed up at 35 yard pass.

The ball doesn’t look much different here than Burrow throwing off the run. Just looking at arm strength.

That play kinda shows what I'm talking about with Bryce though. Burrow put a ball right on the hands of a well covered receiver in stride. Bryce put a ball on the ass cheek of a guy open by 5+ yards.

    • Never been. Going to a concert there Thursday night. Decent tailgating opportunities in the parking area or no? I see people are going to the beer hall to grab a beer to get their parking validated. Seems like a good plan to me. I'd like to smoke a brisket and do a decent spread of food but I just don't know if the parking setup allows for it.

    • Bryce also has a degree in psychology. He has an uncanny ability to compartmentalize things in a way that allows him to enter his second NFL season with optimism that he can still be the player who was worthy of being the No. 1 pick of the 2023 draft despite the kind of rookie year that has destroyed others in his position. Young credits that in part to his past. He graduated from the University of Alabama in three years with a degree in psychology. His father was a therapist in the mental health field for 20 years. His mother was a special education teacher, and his grandfather was a psychologist. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40334565/bryce-young-developing-leader-panthers-year-2
