I imagine that his salary expectations are way too high.

Rather than tender him high now and hve to battle for a LT contract, tender him low and let the market show him that his expectations are too high.

We will match a good offer, but let him walk if someone wants to overvalue him.....and get a 2nd.

If there are teams out there that overvalue him, we would have lost him next year for nothing.

Great move by the FO given his bloated value of himself.

Patriots, Chiefs and Buccaneers all have more than one 2nd round pick and all 3 teams could use a solid corner like Marshall.

Marshall is a solid CB that some teams would like to have. The guy may blow coverages at times but is a very aggressive guy, tackles well and gets the picks.

Keeping Marshall or trading him would be fine with me really. lol

But you have to realize that they would ALSO have to give him a bloated contract that we would not match.

I still think this is a good move. We either....

1. Match a reasonable offer and lock him up

2. Find out that there is actually a team willing to over-value him and get a 2nd round pick.

I would rather either of these happen rather than lose him next year for nothing.

This is a very very smart and calculated move by the Panthers FO, which is odd considering what most posters on here seem to think of them.

Marshall has always let it be known that he is in it for the money and that he has been looking forward to hitting free agency. There is no way he would agree to a contract extension without testing the market first. So, now he gets a glimpse of what his value is and it could either bite him in the ass, or reward him.

Regardless, we will not see Marshall in Panthers colours come 2011, so it makes sense to see if anyone would approach him. If he agrees to a manageable contract we simply match and lock him up without him able to do anything.

Gantt made a clever remark regarding Davis and Moore. He mentioned that the highest tender offered to both, whilst be appropriate of their talent, was also a measure of goodwill, so the agents are more likely to talk long term extensions. If they slapped a lower tender on them, both of them might prefer to hold out for free agency for a team that values them a lot higher. So it is interesting that Marshall has been given the 2nd rounder, as it confirms to him that we do not value him THAT high, so it could make his agent be more active in finding a suitor for him this off-season.

It’s also important to note that Ron Meeks’ Tampa 2-style defense isn’t as dependent on top-shelf corners as other systems, so they could get away with a lesser coverage player as long as he’s smart and a sure tackler. They once went to the Super Bowl playing a lot of Tampa 2 with Reggie Howard and Terry Cousin on the corners, so it can be done with cheaper help
