Panthers Cut Delhomme

Jake was never the same player after Tommy John. So, this move by the front office was long overdue. For the record I despise the way Fox handled Jake last season. Jake should have been allowed to walk away with dignity, but Fox's stubborn streak robbed Jake of the opportunity to walk away from the game with his head held high. I will remember the great memories Jake provided us and not blame him for the last two years.:cheers2:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this mean that any money due to him is coming straight outta JR's pocket and it won't count against us as a team?

So technically, all we did was open up spending space?

I know it's not our style, but I'm curious.

There is no cap so the money is still part of the overall salary the team will spend. Hurney said that while there wasn't a cap that they had a salary budget. Whether he stayed or was cut, the 12.7 millon will still likely be part of the salary budget for this year. So no it won't give us any more spending space since the salary limits are self imposed this year not based on a cap.

Won't be as bad as the 12.7 Mil sounds though... just read again on the Observer and it says that cutting him now will break that up into 3 different payments over 3 years.

That is not how it usually goes. Most times when you cut a guy, all of the guaranteed money accelerates and is due immediately. It would actually be better if it hit now. By extending it over 3 years, there would be cap implications through 2012. Owners don't really have to worry about spending too much up front on things like signing bonuses. If I remember correctly, they are allowed to borrow up to 140 million to use for cash flow issues like paying a ton of money up front or accerelerating payments for guys who are cut.

I'm not sure how to feel right now:

On one hand, he was getting old, he was never the same after the Tommy John, he just didn't have the same swagger as before, he was more of a liability than an asset on the field, there's a younger guy with more potential, he has big numbers coming into an uncapped year.

On the other hand, he provided so many great memories over the years, the Super Bowl, the good playoff games, thrilling game-winning drives, insane throws that somehow succeeded. He had heart, desire, and took all the crap throw at him by the fans and media in stride. All of this from a guy that most expected nothing from.

There is one thing I am sure about though. Would I go through it all once again? Absolutely! I just wish there could had been a happier ending.

(Now I just need to order myself a white 17 jersey)

I'm sad. Do y'all remember when we cut Beuerleine without a veteran backup?

Yes I do, sadly. It took us years to find someone to replace him and bring back the excitement to Panthers football, and that was Jake. I'm hoping the best for Matt because we're gonna need it.

Don't expect alot of money spent in FA. This was a good business decision by JR to shed a large contract in the uncapped year. And he's not going to pick up any other large contract either. He's not forced to spend any money at all. I wonder how well Smitty and Moose and Gamble and Gross are gonna sleep tonight?

BTW, Jake's almost 13 million is quaranteed to 2014 so it can be paid out over the next 5 years. If anyone bothered to read the full articles, they would've seen that.

I'm truly shocked at all the hate being typed tonight and not just towards Jake but towards fellow fans too. That is ultimately vey sad and has influenced what I thought of some posters ..... not that any of you cared, of course.

I will support this team no matter what. :) But I'm sad tonight.

Go Panthers!!

    • See that's the thing what I saw in game 2 was so embarrassing id rather they could just forfeit
    • Are you arguing that his height deficiencies and footwork within the pocket have not been a present issue clearly seen on his game tape particularly in the games he struggled in? Because that's simply denying what everyone in this fanbase who have watched the games have seen. It's interesting how hardline BY fans here quickly and effortlessly pivot from whailing about being victimized to becoming the aggressor and hurling out allegations of bias and hatred. And at the end of the day while Bryce Young clearly improved significantly from the first two games of the season the reality of the situation is he still finished 42nd in yards per pass attempt behind Mac Jones and tied with Caleb Williams and 38th in passing yards per game behind the likes of Gardner Minshew Aidan O'Connell Drake Maye and Will Levis. Furthermore it took Bryce Young 23 games to surpass Panthers legend Kyle Allen's 13 games worth of passing yardage in 2019. So if your argument is he became a head and shoulders better passer over the course of the second half of the season the reality is we're still waiting to see that growth this season. And there is nothing controversial or vitriolic about saying so from the mind of a rational observer.
    • Cam regularly threw for less than 200 yards and nobody questioned he was elite. He averaged 219 yds per game for his career.  You seem to be way too hung up on yards as a stat.  By that definition Jameis Winston should have been MVP by now.
