I could see a surprise trade coming..

Recommended Posts

Wow has Jerry been wielding the axe the past 24 hours! Jake, Landon, Kemo, D.Lewis. Also Pep, Brayton, Moose, and Llyod are all gone as of now. That is a poo load of our starters from last year.

If we are starting over would it surprise anyone if there was a Surprise trade for example Smitty or Deangelo? Because i just get the feeling that something huge is about to go down...Smitty, while i love the guy to death, is over 30 now, and we could sell high on this one and get a nice draft pick for him. It just seems anythings possible with what i have just witnessed..

The fun part is we have to sign guys to replace all these players..

I don't think we are releasing mediocre/overpaid starters in order to trade guys that we need to win. We aren't "starting over" like the Lions or the Chiefs would start over. We are starting over by getting rid of guys that don't contribute enough for the amount they were due to get paid (Kemo was due a huge bonus and he just came off a torn achilles). These guys were not guys that we couldn't replace with guys on the roster already or with guys in the draft/FA. Steve, Deangelo, Stew, are all staying.

However, we might be clearing some cap space to sign a couple big name RFA like Marshall. He is a first round pick tender and I could see them trading the 2011 pick to get Marshall. Charles Grant and Aaron Kampman are also still out there as UFA that we could sign as depth for the DL.

they won't legimately be replaced until after this season.....when Fox is gone. Make no sense from JR's seat to cut all this fat....and then let a lame duck coach spend money. Rejects w/ one year deals is what we will see in Carolina.

If they make a trade, I think it would be Dwill or maybe Gross or Smitty.

Problem with trading Smith is that then what does Matt Moore have? Better sign Bryant and someone else to make up for it.

Whatever happens, the possible big trade would be to get into the First Round of draft and obviously rebuilding around Matt Moore and Meeks Defense. Or just trying to save alot of money till they know what new deal with Players will look like.

The only way ANY of those guys are going anywhere is if they are just legitimately pissed about Delhomme being let go. I don't see that for Gross or Deangelo. I could see Steve being emotional about it but he'll get over it when the team is better and he is back to catching 1100-1200 yards of balls from Moore.

If Carolina will be making ANY trades today, it will be aquiring a player for a draft pick. We won't be getting rid of any high profile players. My guess (if any trades go down) we will aquire someone like Boldin or Marshall to go along with Smitty, which might explain why we are creating so much cap room.. to sign one of these guys to a big deal.

    • Really? You don't see why a team can't draft a QB in the 1st round while then starting their former #1 overall pick over them while on the last year of their deal? It puts the team in a TERRIBLE place no matter how the season goes.  If Bryce sucks, you have to answer questions as to why he was still on the team to begin with, let alone starting over the rookie.  If he's good, then you run into the situation the Vikings were in last offseason with sticking with the rookie contract or the the guy who just performed instead of said young QB. It's one thing when teams keep a vet around as a bridge QB, it's something entirely different when that QB is still only in their mid 20's and was taken #1 overall by that team.   That just doesn't happen and not sure it ever has in NFL history before.
    • What is the alternative? - BY, will not play for less then his perceived contract (just like Cam Newton did). So you pay him top of market as befitting a 1st round, Heisman winning, playing birthing QB would get. Or you cut him. - Then we are forced to either sign a stop gap QB / previously failed QB and try to fix him or you spend a 1st round pick and draft a guy, basically resetting the team.  The reality is that we all want a top 5 QB. The problem is there are only 5 of those guys in the world and drafting, even #1 overall doesn't guarantee that.  The other problem is the NFL market. Young QB get paid. Even an average, young QB gets top of market deals. I know a lot of people here think we could sign him to an 'average QB contract' but thats not reality. Didnt happen with Cam wont happen with BY.  So we could let this season flush out and he is again a middling QB. But then we cut and restart or accept it is what it is (including compensation) and build a team around what we have.  My money is on the latter.
