What exactly happened to Jake Delhomme?

Did the Tommy John surgery do him in? Was he overrated and his glaring deficiencies masked by the immortal Steve Smith? Was his age catching up to him? How can a guy with two stud running backs, above average o-line and a top 5 WR go from this

Seemed to me that his arm got stronger but wilder after the surgery. Most of the time last year, his interceptions came on overthrows.

He was an average QB who would play great four or five times a year, then he had surgery that turned him into a bad QB who would play average four of five times a year. The nail in the coffin is his disaster of a game against AZ in the playoffs, a younger player may have been able to shake that game off but Jake was done. He might be able to serve as a backup but I don’t think he will ever be able to get his confidence back.

What happened was that he was never really that good to begin with.

His confidence was significantly shaken after the AZ game last year. Never recovered from it.

even in his good years there were many times he'd throw the ball and I'd hold my breath...Smitty usually came up with it...until lately. that said, he gave the team and panthers fans some great moments, but his time has come and gone here. On to winning.

Jake was never that good to begin with. Here was average with "intangibles" which suited John Fox's philosophy. But as the league changed to a QB-driven league, Delhomme got exposed more and more. The Arizona game changed Delhomme...he said so in his conference. He tried to change his whole approach to the game and turned into the horrible QB we all love to bash.

Honestly. He is just a good down to earth kinda guy that I think the psyche aside, he could not deal with the pressure that came with a large contract.
