Position Change for a RB?

I have to be honest...it drives me nuts when people start talking about position changes for the Panthers. Stuff like move Marshall to safety, move Rosario to wide receiver, move Stewart to fullback, freakin grinds my gears. But now I will admit I am calling for a position change for a certain running back for the Panthers. I really feel like Mike Goodson should move to wide receiver immediately and for good, here's why:

1) Goodson will not pass Sutton on the depth chart...Sutton is as good of a 3rd down back as the Panthers have ever had. He is young runs hard and whenever Williams or Stewart finally leaves (god forbid) he will be that primary backup. Not to mention that he is pretty decent on special teams.

2) Goodson has great size for the position 6-0 212 lbs, and has great hands...remember that sideline grab during the preseason?

3) Goodson has the speed to get deep, the quickness to get off the line, and the agility and toughness to run after the catch.

4) He actually lined up at WR a little in college, so he might have some experience there already.

5) He can always fill in at RB if need be.

I really think it is an absolute waist to keep him at RB and I think they should start working on running routes with him immediately. If he could make a smooth transition I firmly believe he could be a dynamic receiver for this team and give the Panthers another legitimate playmaker at WR.

Or...is this just as annoying as all those other position change ideas?

we have a huge number of mediocre WR on the depth chart. better to leave him as a RB and line him up wherever we want him. We need 4 RB on this team.

And what makes him mediocre? Cause you say so. Can't really call someone mediocre because he might be new to the position. He may be a natural. His speed is something I think needs to be on the field. As a 3rd down back he probably isn't a bad blocker either which means he can fill Moose's spot if we don't resign him.

I still believe we need to sign an experienced WR but switching Goodson to WR seems like a great idea. He has the hands for it.

Go Panthers

keep in mind brad hoover got 18 yards that day. Things were a little skewed due to the giants suckage.

But yeah goodson showed what he could do on that play. The defenders identified the screen it pretty quick but he was able to get the 1st down with his speed.

Did you seriously just say that Goodson could fill Moose's spot? Are you high?

Catching passes in college and catching passes in the NFL are two totally different things.

It's HUGE adjustment for a guy who has been playing WR to adjust from college to the NFL, so you can only imagine what it would be like for a guy who played HB.

Being good at catching passes out of the backfield in the flats or on little 5 yard dump routes does not mean you can play WR.

The issue is less about whether Goodson would work out at WR and more about whether Goodson would actually embrace being moved to WR. He wasn't really anymore of a RB at A&M than he is now, but he prefers playing RB and believes he can be one at this level as well.

Maybe if he gets a grip on reality first.

Damn I forgot that Goodson has so many moves. Geez, we have the best RB core in the league, UN-f**kING-CONTESTED. If only we were as stacked at WR...

He showed in the preseason he could run against NFL defenses. If he can get his ball control fixed he could be special.

I'm all for this move. When I watch that highlight tape of him at A&M two things come to mind, speed and the ability to make people miss tackles. Sure, the NFL is football at a whole new level, but I'm sure Goodson has gotten bigger, faster, and stronger.

At this point he's 4th on the depth chart, nothing wrong with at least an attempt to make him an impact player at the WR position. With those two characteristics stated above, Goodson is mostly deadly in the open field and WR's get into the open field more than anyone on the field.

My two cents.

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
