Ickey To The Bench

Probably should start wrapping our heads around this possibility. Hunt is the instant starter at RG. Lewis at LG has been the definition of a league average starter over his career ranking 32nd in pass block win rate among guards. I would not be surprised at all of Christensen beats out Ickey for the starting LT spot in Canales’ wide zone scheme, and I think Lewis would beat him out at LG. And we may still add more OL depth. It wouldn’t take much to beat out the Ickey we saw last year.

Especially if he sits on his ass all off-season like last year and doesn’t improve.

I disagree. I think his position coach spent more time being a mole on the team to David Tepper than actually coaching his guys up. Ickey wasn't the only one that sucked last year. The unit as a whole was gonna be better this year and with the FA addition, gonna be even better than that. Just watch......

I really hope so, tbh. I have no doubt the OL as a whole will be better than last year. My main problem with Ickey (besides getting beat like a drum) was his attitude. He came off as a guy that thought he had made it and could just coast. Didn’t seem to have that dawg in him that Morgan talks about. That and an OL guy (I think maybe Mike Wahle) pointed out that it didn’t look like Ickey was working on his craft in the off-season because the things you get from repetition like footwork hadn’t improved for him. Hopefully this past season was a wake up call.

I'm wondering if Icky is as bad of a fit for the scheme as Bozeman was.  There's no room for him to start at guard, and it sounds like BC is moving to the left tackle spot.

Man I swear some of the people here just love talking out of their rear, BOZEMAN was terrible because he he didn't have the lateral movement athleticism to move laterally in an inside/mesh zone scheme or slide in pass pro.

Ickey is in the top 14% of LTs from the last 37 years (over 1500).

His biggest STRENGTH is inside zone!

can you expand on this with some evidence to back it up?

I'm not sure if he is being intentionally obtuse or just has no idea what zone blocking is, ICKEY excels at zone blocking.

I wonder if he was secretly shopped behind the scenes some because he definitely doesnt fit the new blocking scheme either.

Are you familiar with the wide zone blocking scheme?   There are multiple types of zone blocking..

Inside zone and wide zone are completely different types of blocking. Maybe you should google it…

Last year, we incorporated a lot more wide zone, which is what Canales has been known for so far, and Ekwonu looked terrible.

You realize those combine measurements have nothing to do with actually executing a zone blocking scheme, right? Lots of combine warriors wash out of the league. There's a reason why a lot of not most analysts were actually projecting him as a guard in the NFL.

I give you THE combine warrior. Well, not really warrior. More like giraffe on roller skates.

Folks, I do not know a lot, but I was an OL coach and i look for technique improvement when I watch videos or film.  Ickey was not coached.  Campen was absolutely horrible.  Ickey has the tools, he just needs to work on his feet, hands, and balance.  The light will come on, I am 90% sure.

Plus, they were implementing the scheme a week before the season started. Then it changed again and again throughout the year. Thanks for adding another layer of context to these asinine posts!

He looks good when he's allowed to play downhill and maul. Ask him to play in space or pass protect against speed rushers in obvious passing situations and it's struggle city. I hope he works out for us but on paper a wide zone scheme is magnifying his weaknesses and minimizing his strengths. We'll see how it goes. Kinda feels like Jeremy Chinn at FS though.

That's Greg Little. Not sure if you knew that or not.

    • Do you see the vision?  As of now our Carolina Panthers don’t have an identity. We are not an offensive powerhouse and on defense we only started getting it together towards the end of the year last year. In my opinion we are much closer to having an incredible defense that scares the daylights out of people. I say the answer is simple and we fully commit to that possible identity.    Emmanuel McNeil Warren (E man)  This guy is like a shark lurking around ready to attack anyone. Fearless. He is easily a top 20 talent in my eyes, and the only reason he isn’t more talked about is because he’s from Toledo. Do your due diligence as panther fans and watch his tape I beg you. Once you’re done watching let me ask you this, if you dropped E - Man into the strong safety spot on the Buckeyes, he isn’t being talked about as one of the best prospects we’ve seen in some time given the skill set you see with this guy? I think so. Put his name on the card and turn it in at 19.    Jacob Rodriguez  High effort, High energy, High IQ guy that flies around the field. We all know Jacob at this point. My only concern is he’s a little bit too good and I’m not sure he makes it to us at our pick in the second. With the additions of Jacob and E- Man I think our defense goes to top 5 in the league. We would have a duo of linebackers that rival anything we’ve had in our past. I’m not a GM so I don’t know what the possible answer could be, but if there’s a way we can comfortably trade up in the second to secure this guy I think we find a way to do it.    Spend the rest of our picks fixing the O - line.    Thoughts Panthers fans? Who’s the ideal duo for yall?
    • OL is arguably much more important to the success of a young QB. (Or any QB)
    • Didn’t get around to watching this one but looks like Pistons played their starters and actually tried…? Unlucky that they sit vs Magic, etc and try vs us. Hopefully we can beat the Heat and then Magic or 6ers with no Embiid. BUT if not, the NBA really should give us the lottery win this year like they did Mavs last year. Another high pick could be our final missing piece and have us as legit top contenders next year and going forward if we’re healthy. Or trade it for a Giannis type
