Multiple Trade Offers for Bryce

his 2024 prorated 6m bonus is already counting in the salary cap.  converting it to dead money does not change that.  We call it dead money when the guy is gone, but before that we just call it signing bonus hitting the cap.

sportrac seems to suggest an in-season trade would not immediately accelerate the balance of dead money.  instead that would hit as dead money in 2025.  The rest of the guaranteed money is on his new team.

I see what you are saying, essentially this is money already on the cap because it is factored in. Then the remainder hits as 2025 dead cap.

I wasn't thinking about that correctly as already being accounted for in the cap calculation. Given that, it actually would be reasonable to trade him with some limited finagling.

That being the case, they should consider a decent offer.

IMO, the ask should be a 3rd rounder. Overplaying the hand isn't really much of a risk. 4th rounders and lower are generally lower hit rate guys so the attraction to dump him for a 4th now versus a 5th or lower in the offseason isn't compelling. Wait it out until you get the price you want by the trade deadline.

We aren't in a weak position this time.

Wait, wait....this is still not correct. The prorated amount on the 2024 cap is literally the 2nd year amount. He still has two years left on the deal. By rule, the dead cap for those last two years accelerates on to the current year(2024) and the following(2025). So it is an ADDITIONAL hit this league year. Just think of it as him being cut post June 1st(essentially what this is minus the actual base salary hit).

That's the confusing part.  I always thought it accelerated in the current year too, but sportrac has it spread into 2025 and 2026.  It would probably be impossible to absorb an additional 12m in the current season meaning they will have to hang on to him through this year, then try to move him in 2025, when they can spread the dead cap over 2025/2026 if they want.

It does acceralte to the current league year. If you read the rule, that is what happens.

That is why they posted the $8 mil dead cap hit. That's all new dead cap.

He's already getting $8.6M this year as it stands, trading him would have the other team paying for his last 7 games which we would probably just break even with signing a guy to replace him. It frees up that $475k the trading team would be paying for.

But also immediately incurs an additional dead cap lump sum, making it $8.2 total dead cap. The question is how much of that is "new" dead cap. I think it would be about an additional $6 mil, correct? If OTC is correct about the prorated bonus money, anyway.

Either way, I am curious to see when they opt to move him.

If he lasts into the 2025 season, I will interpret that as Tepper still doing Tepper things.

I hear that Dalton is on a short leash because the team is going back to Bryce at some point this season. "We do think he has a future here." If true I'm speechless.

Yeah, his future here is to be showcased for a trade. Better be.

    • I understand why people say things like it could be worse in relation to Tepper but it just doesn't jive for me. Are the optics bad? Yes. Would I want her to be the owner of my team? No. But I mean she's only been owner for a year and the Colts overall are a better run organization. As far as I know they've also never had the distinction of having the worst win percentage in all of professional sports either. Tepper has owned this team for 8 years and about the only thing that has been consistent has been the ability to continue to find different ways to achieve new lows. Even now people are saying things are different yada yada but we said these same things at certain points under Rhule Fitterer and Reich. I'm going to wait to see how the rubber meets the road this upcoming season before I make any strong conclusions about anything in relation to the longevity under this franchise going forward.
    • This is a toughie because I wonder what a guy like Canales thinks about redemption stories for addiction issues. Also, I think this is a case of 1 player getting caught, and not being naive enough to think this isn't more common in college than we think. I'd toss a 3rd rounder out there. 2026 is essentially a redshirt season regardless, so he's not taking over for any NFL QB next year. Best case, he's ready to go in 2027 if we pass on Bryce's extension. Worst case, he's our future backup QB2. Kid has the tools to be an NFL QB. I do think we could somehow land a '26 3rd round pick back in a trade. Our past years' third rounders are: Brazzell Princely Wallace DJ Johnson Matt Corral All this to say, I could see a team like the Jets going w/ a 2nd. They have three FRPs next year.
