Mortensen: Panthers interested in Umenyiora

Mr. Scot

I think it's probably safe to say it isn't their fault. I'm sure ESPN asks for this stuff. These guys are on TV every single day, so they have to say something new.

oh, it's definitely ESPN's fault.. I don't remember Schefter being so horrible until he signed back with this gig at ESPN..

it doesn't excuse either side for their bullshit.. :)

It does get to the point where I don't even listen to them unless it's absolutely confirmed news. For a while I listened, thinking maybe they new something. No longer.

i like osi, and would love to see him in a panther uniform, but what we should really be looking at is DT not DE
you can get both.

we need a solid vet presence brought in at DE to go along with brown/johnson/brayton. i'd much rather have that than drafting one at this point.

finding that solid vet DE is going to be harder than finding a couple UTs to solidify that DT rotation we are going to be using all year.

same.. I don't respect that whole charade and rarely believe it until someone else confirms.. (majority of the time, no one confirms because it's never true)

you can get both.

agreed.. whoever we draft will not have immediate impact. I'm not sure why people think we are going to draft someone to do just that.. we just grabbed Brown in the 2nd and a DT in the 3rd by the name of Irvin and they weren't a factor last year, other than Brown having a few flashes..

it's going to take that position time to really show up... especially a player from the 3rd..

I would not mind Osi here at all.

We have two young DE's with a ton of potential in Brown and Johnson. Pair that with vets like Brayton and Osi, and we have a very good rotation. We are not sacrificing the short-term or the long-term of the position/team with that set.

He still has three years left on his contract. That alone would probably prevent Hurney from pulling the trigger unless the contract is structured so that an early cut will not cause a major cap hit (unlikely).

Unless his contract has a bunch of guaranteed money left, there wouldn't be any cap hit at all if we let him go. Most times the cap hit comes from a player's signing bonus and upfront money accelerating if he is cut. On a trade none of the signing bonus carries forward. All we are on the hook for is his yearly salary which is not guaranteed and doesn't figure into the cap hit. Any roster bonuses or other clauses sometimes are guaranteed and other times are not.

Rotoworld reported this as his contract terms:

12/24/2005: Signed a six-year, $41 million contract extension through 2012. The deal includes $15 million guaranteed. 2009: $2.55 million (+ $500,000 roster bonus, + $31,250 per-game roster bonuses), 2010: $3.1 million (+ $1.1 million in roster bonuses), 2011: $3.125 million, 2012: $3.975 million, 2013: Free Agent

He wouldn't be that expensive. On the other hand since we are spending nothing and want no contracts long-term, it is hard to believe we would go after any guy who wasn't playing on a veteran minimum.

I would take him with that remaining contract.

yeah, that isn't too expensive considering what you get. a guy who is a proven producer, under 30 (barely), former first team all pro, 48 sacks in 6 seasons, two years removed from that ACL tear, still one of the top pass rushing DEs in the league despite low production coming back from that ACL tear and being part of that heavy NYG DE rotation...you just can't ask for much more than that.

considering how good and deep this DE draft class is, we should be able to get him for relatively cheap. i'd consider giving the giants a 6th this year and a 5th next and see if they bite.

Are we not due to get a compensatory pick in next years draft for Peppers? Like a 3rd rounder...if thats the case, trading a pick in the 2nd or 3rd would be a loss, but we'd still have another 3rd to work with.

you don't know what your compensatory picks are until a month or so before the draft, but i'm pretty sure it's safe to safe we will get at LEAST a 3rd rounder for his expensive ass.
