Is it too early to lock up Horn to a long term deal?

He’s constantly locking up the opposite teams number 1 receiver and very rarely being thrown at.

That's not really true. He is a averaging 5.1 targets/GM which is the 2nd highest in his career(2023 - 5.17 targets/GM).

He is also allowing the highest QB Rating in his career this year.

2024: 91.7

2023: 84.1

2022: 62.4

2021: 39.6

Technically, for pass coverage metrics this has almost universally been his worst year as a professional.

I do think that's a little misleading, as our front seven is also the worst it has been in his career.

I think you kind of have to. We are thin and cannot lose talent on defense. I hope they can work out a deal to pay him what he is worth which right now is top 15-10. Keep him here and hope to land a guy who can push him to #2 for the remainer of his 2nd contract. Getting pass rush will boost him up too.

Its tough to grade him without any resemblance of a pass rush.

You have to lock him up though IMO as long as its reasonable and fair

The reasonable part I think will be tough. IMO, I don't really think he is going to want to resign with us. He seems to be an "emotions on his sleeve" guy that really hates losing. That's not really going to be changing much before his contract will be up.

If we want to keep him around it will have to be by tagging or overpaying, IMO.

    • You joke, but hasn't basically the whole team been in Charlotte this past week together? I'm not one to see the random dumb stuff players put out on social media in the offseason and think it means that's ALL they've been doing and not working on their game.  But it's a little strange that all this is coming out at the same time we're seeing tons of stuff with the team in Charlotte together, even if it's just working out and not even official team OTA's or anything. So he gets a pass from me saying anything now, but if he doesn't show clear improvement this season, it then opens him up to some retroactive criticism for some things.
    • Ha-ha, I bet that went through everyone's mind.  Admittedly I don't read all the comments in a thread before I make a post. Great minds think alike!
    • Cam was hitting his stride as a QB in 2017/2018.     This is why I think stats like completion percentage are overrated. As long as a QB is clutch and makes the throws to win the game the rest doesn’t really matter. What good is a check down stat padder if they’re a choker.  Until Norv Turner (and briefly Chud) got here we put Cam in high pressure throwing situations all the time. We also ran the ball on first down more than most teams in the NFL in the Ron era. Coupled with shitty WRs, all that is expressed in his stats. I also assume Cam took the ball in his hands on many occasions rather than trust Funchess to catch the ball.    It was also never Cams job to play the game like someone else. His presence on the field dictated the game in a way that is rarely seen.  He showed he could play the dink and dunk game just before TJ Watt. That didn’t suddenly make him better than his earlier seasons. He just got put in a legit under center  passing game again for first time since his rookie year with Chud.    Ron took the quickest path to success and abused the RPO because his ass was about to get fired.    Cam never got the credit for being the cerebral player that he was. I just think when you are legitimately a human Superman, sometimes the best play is having the ball in your hands. He was a better passer than Delhomme was.
