Hot Take: This team will never get over the hump, until we move on from Bryce.

It also helps to have a defense that doesn't give up 40 points a game

this is the right answer. we had a HISTORICALLY bad defense that gave up far more points than they should have and actually cost us games we would have won by scoring as much as we did. When Bryce came back, he wasn't the problem. He would have been the reason we won games had the defense not given up so much.

NFL.com has him as the 14th best regular season QB according to their QB index, and that's with the disaster that was the first couple weeks.

If the team is able to maintain some continuity with the OL + young guys avoid sophomore slumps, then the offense is going to be in a good place.

Big question will be how long does it take to address the defense and what else becomes an issue during that time?

Yup. The D had a brief period of respectability vs NO, NYG, KC, and PHI. But even there they couldn't stop KC when it mattered most or hold the Bucs after Chuba's fumble. Bryce HAD to have the ball last for us to have a chance to win basically.

There will always be injuries so we need more O depth.  For the O specifically, I'm less about getting that coveted #1 receiver and more about adding more depth to the offense... We basically need depth everywhere, and we're likely losing some in FA already.

Couldn't agree more re: offensive depth. Every starter on the OL this season missed time and yet the unit still performed above average thanks to guys like Cade Mays and Brady Christensen filling in. Sounds like Brady is going to search for starter money somewhere else (awesome for him and his family if they get it!), but bringing back Cade Mays and finding another high quality sixth man would be an excellent start. Then there's the question re: Corbett to answer as well.

WR room is going to need bodies for sure since only Legette, Coker, and Thielen are under contract for next season. TE room as well since Sanders is the only one under contract (though Matthews did just sign on for next season).

And finally, what to do with QB2?

It's nice to be excited about an offseason that can build upon the previous season again.

    • If we don't go OT, we will regret it.  What bothers me?  Are we going to get a starting-caliber OT at 19?  I think the draft is solid at OT, and the more I read up and watch video, the more I watch Lomu, the more I want him.   I see Freeling as a RT who needs some work in run blocking (since we need to run first, maybe not a good fit) and I see Proctor ending up as a Guard.  After Lomu (assuming Mouigia and fanu are gone), I think we wait until round 2.  In round 2, there are about 3-4 I like (Zuhn--good pass blocker and VERY underrated right now; Tiernan is a very good pass blocker as is Miller from Clemson, but both are not good in the run game.  Max Ixxxxx from Ariz St is impressive too---technically, there is not a of difference in these second tier guys--good in pass pro, need work in the run game.   If we wait until round 2 for an OT, we probably need to sign Nijman and start him early.   I almost think this is what we should do if Lomu is gone.  There is a big dropoff after him, imo, and I think we'd get better value if a stud ILB or edge is there.  Someone like TJ Parker Clemson makes sense. If Lomu is gone, trading back might be the play.
    • And what is x gunna help with except show him what not to do. Plus for the first year and a half he was just an obstacle
    • I understand that some people want WR. I am solidly against using yet another high pick there. Coker is pretty good and we used No picks on him.  What I think we really need at WR is a little bit of a Smitty lite. It is ridiculous to say let’s get a Smitty because you just can’t do that, but someone not tall and long striding but more in his mold. I think we’d have a pretty well rounded group.    Looking at tackle, with replacing Moton looming, it just seems like the no brainer.  You fill in Icky short term. Depending on how he recovers, and how the new guy plays, you go from there. A tackle at 19 is most likely either a LOT, a ROT, or a big talented guard, at worst. We will need all three in the next couple of years.  I would love to have a stud ILB be there at 19 but the OL is the responsible thing to do I believe.
