Walterfootball's disappointing mock draft...

I've been utilizing walterfootball.com for my predraft info for the last few years and I usually find that they are very good at what they do. They have tons of information on prospects and their articles are generally really good. However, their recent 7 round mock left little to be desired...either they are having an off year or they just don't know the Panthers very well. Here is their take on who the Panthers will select this weekend.

2nd round: Marty Gilyard, WR, Cincinnati

Don't really understand the love affair some guys have with him, he is weak off the line, very skinny, has average hands, and average speed. Just because he is a good return man people have been crowning him the next Steve Smith or something, which is ridiculous. The biggest problem I have is that he is a third round prospect at BEST and he could even fall to the fourth. I would be very upset if the FO reached this much for a glorified kick returner.

3rd round: Lamaar Houston, DT, Texas

This one I really don't have too many problems with. I feel like we should address the DT spot with one of the first three picks. I would love to land a run stuffer like Linval Joseph or Torrell Troup but we could definitely do worse than a guy like Houston. He is more of a penetrator and disruptor but I wouldn't mind this pick.

4th round: Ed Wang, OT, Virginia Tech

A Tackle??? Let me give you a list, Jordan Gross, Jeff Otah, Travell Wharton, and Geoff Schwartz. These are 4 quality tackles already on the team, and there is also that Williams kid who made the squad last year. IF the offensive line is addressed I can only see it being at center where it would be nice to have a backup...but tackle...we are loaded there.

6th round: a. Dan Lefevour, QB, Central Michigan b. Willie Young, DE, NC State c. TJ Ward, S, Oregon

I like Lefevour but I don't think this team will benefit from another inexperienced QB on the roster. Is lefevour supposed to help mentor Moore and help him read defenses? Come on, the FO will bring in a vet at some point and that will be the guy. Generally Fox likes to carry two QB's anyway.

Willie Young? Why is that since we brought in Everette Brown everybody thinks we are going to start bringing in these undersized defensive end prospects left and right? I understand that it has to do with how Meeks ran things in Indy but this is still John Fox's defense and he loves bigger guys like Julius Peppers and Michael Strahan. I just don't see it.

I love the Ward pick, probably my favorite of all the picks but I highly doubt he is available at the end of the sixth round. He will probably go in the 4th-5th round. I would love to have him and he would definitely help but I don't think it's realistic.

7th round: a. Reggie Stephens, OG, Iowa St. b. Seyi Ajirotutu, WR, Fresno St.

I wouldn't mind the Stephens pick if it hadn't been for the comment that was made, "The Panthers have a very questionable situation at right guard. Neither Mackenzy Bernadeau nor Duke Robinson has shown much promise." Are you kidding me? Did they even pay attention to the last 4-5 games that Bernadeau started? Jonathon Stewart ran wild and Matt Moore was hardly touched. I'm pretty sure Bernadeau has the right guard spot locked down which still leaves Robsinson and Schwartz who could potentially move over.

With Aijrotutu I really don't mind picking another WR but I have a problem saying his name so it would be hard for me to like this guy. Just kidding but honestly if the Panthers are going to pick two receivers I hope they don't wait until the end of the 7th to do so.

So in review we reached ridiculously for our first pick, wasted our third pick on a position of strength, and waited until the end of the 7th round to grab another wide receiver. Oh and no linebackers at ALL in our mock draft, which is one of the weakest positions on the team in terms of depth. I don't know about you guys but in my opinion they really dropped the ball on this mock draft, then again I guess that's why they call them "mock drafts".

Gilyard will not fall to the third round... Taking him in the second is legit, even if 48 is still a little early for him...

He has room to add strength and has above average speed, quickness, and route running skills... The return ability is a bonus, but he is one of my favorites because of his receiving ability...

Thought they were good the last few years also, but you are right not so good this year. I also check draft tek, but I did not like their much ether.

"Good route runner" always cracks me up. Running their route is part of their job, and not a particularly difficult part. Since when did people get praised for doing theor job right? If you're not doing it, it's because you're lazy.

I don't know what more the guy could have done to show he's a lethal all-around playmaker in the mold of DeSean Jackson. I still vividly remember a game at Oklahoma his junior year in which Gilyard racked up 365 all-purpose yards against a team that wound up playing for the national championship. Last year he had one highlight after another in the Bearcats' 12-0 regular season, most notably in their BCS-clinching win over Pittsburgh, during which Gilyard broke a 99-yard kickoff return and made a 68-yard touchdown catch. Despite all this, McShay has 15 other receivers ranked ahead of Gilyard, including the likes of Taylor Price (Ohio) and Andre Roberts (The Citadel). I think Gilyard could be a sure-fire No. 2 or 3 receiver and a great return man.

Also Seyi Ajirotutu would be a possible sleeper pick; he has a huge upside. I agree taking two OL doesn't seem likely. But I think we do need some depth on the L with Vincent leaving.
