Trader Joes

Things I have liked:

Purple Moon Shiraz (my new favorite wine)

Vegetable Sticks (like potato sticks)

Red Pepper and Garlic Spread (put on chicken)

Great cheese selection (all have been good)

Whole wheat hot dog and hamburger buns

Things I didn't like:

Lobster sushi roll

White Cheddar Cheese pops

Simpler Times Beer

Lime flavored water

I'll try to pick up that Shiraz next time I'm in. I've enjoyed most of the wines I've picked up from Trader Joe's, but none have "wowed" me yet.

As for the Simpler Times beer, well, what'd you expect for $2.99 a six-pack?:P

You like good beer? If you do, Trader Joe's has some great options. Chief among them is their private-labeled "Stockyard Oatmeal Stout," which is actually brewed by Goose Island, a very popular microbrewery out of Chicago. $1 a beer, and it is a very, very good stout.

They have several other privately-labeled beers that are pretty good. I enjoy their JosefsBrau Dunkelweizen (brewed by Gordon Biersch). Also $1 a beer.

They carry North Coast Old Rasputin, which is probably my favorite beer, as well as some of the more popular craft offerings (Stone, Rogue, Unibroue).

As you can see, I mainly just buy beer at Trader Joe's (and wine, like yourself). They do have a chili pepper hot sauce that is awesome -- it's not really hot, but it has a great flavor.

Nice.....I will definitely try the ones you mentioned. For a buck a beer I should jsut by an assortment and find which one I like.

I know.....I thought for $2.99 maybe I found a bargain. Drank 1 1/2 and took the rest to my neighbors one day and hid it in his fridge. :)

I am not a wine snob and rarely buy a bottle over $10 for myself but I do like wine....the Purple Moon is $3.99 a bottle and I like it better than many more expensive wines I have tried. Everyone has different tastes though.

Yeah, definitely pick up a variety. Most of the dollar beers I've tried have been worth the money, but that Stockyard Oatmeal Stout is a really great beer. I would probably buy a six-pack for $8.99 if I had to (which is what Goose Island actually sells it at).

They have some lighter beers that might be good this time of year (Kolsch, Hefeweizen, etc.). Most of their "German" offerings are brewed by Gordon Biersch, which is a pretty popular brewer of German beers that adheres to the German beer purity law.

I'm the same way. I'm just starting my journey into wine, so I don't feel like I can appreciate it as well as I can beer, nor do I feel my palate is advanced enough to pick up on a lot of the little nuances that are found in more expensive wines.

So, like yourself, I very rarely pay more than $10 a bottle. Trader Joe's has some great prices on wine, so I can spend $5-10 and not worry if it's not mind-blowing.

I also just bought one of those aerators, and it really does seem to "open up" all of these cheap wines I'm drinking. :P
