Without a doubt, Steve is a freak athlete and the heart and soul of our team. However,52 is the heir to the throne.

Statistically for their positions Beason is more productive.

From the shear standpoint of "we lose without him" I'd say hell yes. He brings a lot of fire to our offense that can't be measured by stats.

Beason can be argued as one of the best LB's in the game, and can also be argued as being a really good one, but not top 5-8.

My point is that it can't be argued that Smith isn't one of the best. However this year, or next is probably the last of that he will be that high.

He's also our best player period. Beason may be the most vital part of our team, but Smith is the best player. Most explosive playmaker, demands the most respect from opposing teams, etc. His presence alone opens up the entire offense.

Last year, I don't think that was true. Now, with a change at quarterback, Smith could certainly start demanding more coverage, but I still think defenses will gameplan more heavily on whichever running back is in at the time.

You shut Smith down, and the Panthers have shown they can get by on the running game. Could the Panthers get by with no running game?
