Same guy that can "fix" The Golden Calf of Bristol thinks Clausen is a lost cause. Guy is entitled to his opinion...

Bradshaw no big fan of Clausen

MIDDLEBURY — Known for his often-animated commentary, former Pittsburgh Steelers and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback pulled no punches Friday when tackling some prominent signal callers.

And former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen was not immune to Bradshaw's beliefs.

Bradshaw kicked off an innovative campaign with EverGreen Recreational Vehicles in Middlebury Thursday and criticized the on-field techniques of the Carolina Panthers' second-round draft pick.

"Let me say what I said before earlier up to the (NFL) draft," Bradshaw began about Clausen. "I didn't like him in college and I don't like him now. I never did like him. I don't like his delivery. I don't like his motion. I think he's too slow.

"Physically, the way he threw the football, I just didn't like him. (There's) way too much shoulder action. (He's) just another guy as far as I'm concerned."

Out of the NFL since 1983, the 61-year old now serves as a football analyst and co-host of FOX NFL Sunday.

"That's an observation from television," Bradshaw continued. "I hear great things about (Clausen), but he's just not my kind of quarterback. It's just a feel thing, that's all it is. Now prove me wrong, I'll be the first to say 'Wow that guy's really good.'"

Bradshaw believes Joe Montana is the greatest quarterback ever.

"(Montana) was a third-rounder," Bradshaw said. "And Jimmy may end up being that, (but he) played for such a big institution. I don't know how many big games he won? As far as I can count, not many, if any. So I kind of go by that. A lot

of guys can throw the football and pile up stats, but are you a difference-maker?

"I wish I could say it kinder, but it just doesn't come out right. I hope he proves me wrong."

Not known for accumulating numerous stats himself, the two-time Super Bowl MVP went on to critique troubled current Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who has surpassed some of his club records. He also disapproved of Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Michael Vick's recent antics in Virginia.

"Use your brains," Bradshaw said. "There's so much money and I don't understand why they don't just stay home in their mansions and have people cater to them. It just gets out of hand. It's a sad thing. They have to be careful about who they are and what they represent."

Bradshaw did complement Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre for avoiding a media frenzy this offseason. He also contended that the Detroit Lions are taking the necessary steps to restore hope within its organization with Matthew Stafford.

"I think (the Lions) are doing the right thing with (Stafford)," Bradshaw said. "He looks like the kind of guy who gets into it and shows he's mad. That's a guy (Stafford) whose leading them. I like him. I like him a lot. I like what he brings. (The Lions) still have a long way to go, but they're definitely on the right track."

The best part about this situation is that even if Bradshaw is right it's not like we wasted a top 10 pick on clausen...he is a mid 2nd round guy. If clausen just ends up being a great backup then that's about all we should expect. With that said Bradshaw is a joke...I don't even watch fox anymore bc of how annoying he is.

The best part about this situation is that even if Bradshaw is right it's not like we wasted a top 10 pick on clausen...he is a mid 2nd round guy. If clausen just ends up being a great backup then that's about all we should expect. With that said Bradshaw is a joke...I don't even watch fox anymore bc of how annoying he is.

It just seems like another clog in the media contrived Clausen hate machine. Did he really watch any ND football games? After all they are an exclusive NBC franchise who he has jabbed multiple times.

It's just funny to me that Clausen makes the cover of ESPN magazine for the perfect spiral and then you read this type of stuff. He says stats don't matter as much as W/L.. fair enough but 7:1 TD/INT ratio and high 60's completion% while throwing 30-50 passes a game implies to me his release was working just fine.

Watching Jimmy Clausen's highlights brings to mind a few things. He seems to have decent mobility, and can throw well on the run. Very accurate with short and medium passes. But his long ball is suspect. Still doesn't show how well he can handle the pressure though. Of course, watching a few highlight reels doesn't tell the whole story.

Also, Golden Tate looks pretty good.

Of all the criticisms that have been leveled at Clausen. Having a long slow delivery wasn't one I have heard before.

Me neither. I have seen him have to really wind up to throw it deep, maybe thats what Bradshaw was talking about. But on his short and medium range passes, he doesn't take long to get the ball away.

If all it took was a cannon arm, then Cantwell would be our starter. Obviously arm strength and delivery can be issues but what is between his ears is most important. And he is reported to be bright and quickly picking up the offense. Perhaps this is another reason though for Moore to start and for Scherer to have time to work with Clausen much like he did with Cantwell.

      I like what Freeling brings to the table all around. If he is willing to put in the work he has an opportunity to be one of the better Tackles in the league down the line. Hunter Brazzell and Hecht are all premium additions but development from our staff are the key to unlocking them. Hopefully Lee and Wheatley will provide much needed additional depth to our secondary. Beyond that it's important not to get too caught up in draft grades. Many drafts over the years that turned out to be really good were not fawned over with praise. While some that were ended up being historical duds. Panthers fans ought to know this as well as anyone. In conclusion...

      Maybe a bit of a homer take but I can't give us a grade lower than A.   Freeling was arguably the best LT prospect in the draft.  His athletic ability is off the chart and at 6'7" that can move.  It was a no brainer pick.   Hunter's key word is Violence. Putting him next to Brown should scare an offensive coordinator. These two give Scourton and Phillips plenty of chances to get one on one opportunities. Brazzell, another tall receiver with sprinter speed.  Our WR room is filled with tall talented WR.  Brazzell is going to give us a WR that can take to roof off the defense.  Basically Jimmy Horn with size. W. Lee III has a nickname of the Blanket. (heard this on the Beleav podcast with J. Stewart)  What a great name.  A great value in the 5th round. Hecht A strong, fast and extremely smart center. Many had him listed as the best center in the draft.  He's most likely a starter sooner than later. Wheatley A good safety in round 5.  Someone who could see playing time.   Kuwatch  I love this pick.  At minimum he will be a key piece on special teams and with some good coaching he'll see some packages where he'll play.  His down piece is he doesn't stay up in the running game.  Good coaching will fix this.  He reminds me a bit of A.J. Klein.   All these picks were great value.  I believe everyone of them were graded higher than the pick we took them.   Dan Morgan is IMO doing a great job turning this team into a good team with great depth.
