Always heard what a great long lasting car Toyota makes

So a couple of years ago, I buy one for my wife. Before it makes it one year, she totals it. The insurance pays off, and we decide to get another Toyota, since she did like the first one. We bought a slightly used Corolla with only 42,000 miles on it.

The check engine light started coming on a lot last December. We took it back to the dealer since it was still under warranty, and they replaced the ECU (sensor unit I think). 4 months later, the check engine light comes on again. I replaced the gas cap, and once again it stayed off for a few months. But this week, it came on again while we were on vacation. Took it in to the dealership again once I got back, and now they tell me it needs a new transmission.

65,000 miles and it needs a new transmission? Toyotas suck. ;)

Seriously, I realize I probably had some bad luck and got a Lemon (maybe thats why the original owner traded it in the first place). Its being fixed under warranty, so I don't have to pay. In fact, I will go ahead and say that the dealership (Modern Toyota in Winston) has been great to work with. Even with all the problems, I might buy from them again just because of the quality of service.

But the warranty will soon run out. I was just wondering if I should go ahead and get rid of it by trading it in on something else, or stick it out and hope that the transmission problem is the last problem for a while? This is the first time I have owned a car that needed major work while still under 100,000 miles.

Nah Toyota makes a great, long losting product. Same as Honda.

But you gotta realize cars today are so sophisticated with the onboard electronics and that most major repairs are killers. I would not buy a new car today I expected to keep past the manufacturers warranty without also buying an extended warranty, preferably from the manufacturer. (Not aftermarket).

I'd either buy old enough to throw away in case of major failure, or lease and return before the warranty ever expires if I wasn't going to buy an extended warranty. Heck, the first 3 years of maintaince costs on most Hondas/Toyotas is under $500. Lease it, return it and get a new one.

I have a Toyota Highlander. We can't get the check engine light to stay off. We've spent over $3k and half of that is at the local Toyota dealer. The car is paid for but with repairs I'm still forking out so much money the last few years that I'm averaging out over $100 a month and that's not including routine maintenance, tires etc.

My husband has a new Corolla Sport. He is getting hit with all the recall stuff. We had to get rid of his old Toyota truck because after rebuilding half the engine we were going to have to rebuild the other, all that after replacing the clutch and a handful of other things.

I'm not sure we will go with Toyota again. His parents ran a Camry and toyota truck into the ground and had good luck with them.....us not so much.

Trade your Toyota because you worry about issues for a..........Ford?

Drove Fords for years, and never had an issue with them this early in the car's life. I had some problems with the cooling system on the Mercury my wife drove a few years ago, but that was at 130,000 miles. And Fusion has an excellent reputation.

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
