Fair competition???

I know we don't need another armanti Edwards thread but does anybody else get the feeling that this isn't a fair competition for punt returner? In the first game Edwards took all the punts and the KO returns and no one else got a shot. Last week we saw munnerlyn, Moore, and Witherspoon but only after Edwards' muffed punt.

I feel like some of these guys could be better options but haven't got a fair look...especially Witherspoon. It's like the FO wants Edwards to win it so they can at least have a reason to make him active on gameday. It's obvious that he is a year or two away and I cant imagine why they wouldn't wan the best guy to be back there...which by the way seems to be munnerlyn. I really hope guy gets a chance to return a few this week.

Kinda makes you wonder how many other position "battles" are really an open competition or if it's just whomever the coaching staff wants.

i thought about this just the other day.

it's very rare that carolina has a true competition for any position.

they might say there is, but roles are usually handed to someone by default.

It's not just Carolina.

Another thing is the perception of the fans. Most fans view productivity based on individual plays. They may see an audible to a pass on 3rd and 4 that nets a first down as 100% positive, while the plan may have been to not pass from that formation unless/until late in the 4th if needed. We don't see that, we see the success of the first down without thinking that, had we stuck with the original play, we may have still gained the 1st and left the pass from that formation available as a surprise so to speak if needed later. We'll praise teh QB while the coaches are less than happy.

Edwards is getting all the returns because he needs as much in-game experience as possible. He's the best fit for the position athletically so it makes sense that the coaching staff are pushing for him to return kicks, and he did show flashes at times. Obviously if he hasn't fully grasped it by the start of the season Munny will be the guy.

If you had a guy who you thought had the ability to become a game changer, but he's green and needs experience what do you do? You get him as many reps as you can to get him as much experience as possible. It doesn't hurt the team for him to make mistakes now. If he's going to become the player they hoped he would be on draft day, this is valuable experience for him. He won't get any better sitting on the bench.
