Wednesday update: Plans can change

Panthers coach John Fox said Wednesday, before heading for the airport, that his plan was to play his starters "about a quarter," in Thursday's preseason finale at Pittsburgh.

"But like all plans," he added quickly, "they can adjust."

In recent years, Fox has kept all his starters off the field for the final preseason game, and that could extend into the Steelers game.

He laughed when asked if WR Steve Smith or RB Jonathan Stewart might play, referring to them as "game-time decisions."

-- He did rattle off the list of guys who didn't practice Wednesday. It's largely the same as recent days, with the addition of G C.J. Davis (head).

We even asked if he meant C.J. Wilson (also out, with a head), since sometimes he gets confused -- like on Tuesday when he referred to released WR Oliver "Tre" Young as "Tre Oliver."

But Fox confirmed that he had all his C.J.s in order.

Also not making the trip, per his list, will be DE Tyler Brayton, CBs Richard Marshall and Captain Munnerlyn, S Aaron Francisco, RB Tyrell Sutton and RT Jeff Otah.

We certainly can't go to New York with the offense playing the way it is and expect to be competive.

I say let the starters play for an extended period of time, maybe the whole first quarter.

if our defense plays like the way it is, and we have smitty, i dont see why itll be a problem

our offense is Double Trouble and Smitty. Whatever we see in preseason simply isn't going to be the Panther offense.

It'll be nice to see the first team defense.. Hey i need something to get excited about...

I'm not worried about the offense. As soon as Steve Smith steps onto that field, coverages flow his way whether he's 100% or not. That means other receivers get open easier. It means safeties think twice about getting in the box. It means you'll see less blitzing since with at least 2 people on smith, that leaves ALL dumpoffs open when you blitz more than 1.

Like many of our panther years, Steve Smith is our offense, even when he's not the one making the plays. His impact will be enough.

    • Not in same league. Caldwell just hit a 10.00 on the RAS. 2nd out of 3830 from 1987 onward.  https://x.com/MathBomb/status/2027885023387349047 Yeah I mean Louis had a sub 9.00 RAS. Still very very good, no doubt. Louis is small, no 2 ways about it. He is likely a sub package lb in nickel packages or specialized WLB. Be fine ST gunner to start for sure. 6 foot flat and 220lb is pushing it for a starting LB. At 10 to 20lbs less than the other LBs he'd better be closer to the top in most timed drills. He's gonna be challenged when some of the wrs in the class can matchup bigger stronger faster, much less TE in the run game.  Yeah instinct matter and he has them, but that size is a massive red flag compared to many of the other LBS in this class.    Rodriguez is the LB that really climbed this week from a pure grit guy to great flash with athleticism people wrote off cause he was a QB at first at UVA. 18.4mph in the backpedal. Production the last 2 years were great. I'd be thrilled with him as the future mike.   Hill likely moved out of 51 and into the top 45 picks ( Ravens at 45 I can't imagine don't bite if he makes it there). Honestly Hill imo is a 1st rounder and I'd be ok with him as he fits the MLB we have missed the last few years. People would crow it's a reach but he's top 30 all-time I'm RAS for a LB at 9.9+ . Plus he was big time in big games when he was healthy. And that br a big check: meds.
    • Miller, Melo, Coby, Moose, and Bridges all on the floor at the same time must be a nightmare for defenses lol. Switch one out for Kon and still a nightmare. Coby really does bring a true 6th man value and looks like he could start if Melo was out after only a few games of getting his feet wet.
    • Well I guess he should stop playing football. This was his defining moment and chance to prove he was generational and he failed. What a waste of football life..
