Jeff Otah - OUT for Sunday's game

The Rock Hill Herald had the news of the day for the Panthers. Jeff Otah, a superior right tackle, is not going to play Sunday against the Giants. Otah might not even play for two or three weeks.

Otah, a third-year pro from Pitt, had his knee scoped near the start of training camp and the plans were for him to return for the season opener. The Herald reported that Otah said he had a "mini-setback," in his recovery.

"I'm hoping in the next couple weeks, the next two or three weeks I'll get back out there and start practicing," Otah told the paper Thursday. "I didn't think it was going to be this long. I didn't expect it to be this long.

"It's frustrating, but all I can do is try to rehab as well as I can to get back out there."

"Things didn't go as planned, but I've got to get back out there and keep working," Otah said. "I might have pushed myself a little too hard coming back. ... I'm a little upset with that, but got to move on and try to get back out there."

Geoff Schwartz, a second-year guy from Oregon, will step in and that is not a bad deal for the Panthers, except for the fact they lose some depth. It's still hot out and it would be nice to rotate tackles, but that is a luxury now.

Schwartz is certainly a player Carolina can trust. When Otah missed the last three games of the 2009 season, Schwartz stepped in. The Panthers still ran the ball with authority. One of the three games was against the Giants where Jonathan Stewart ran for 206 yards in a rout.

I am glad to be here visiting my family in Jersey...three Giants fans, four Eagles fan and me!

Reading this about Otah...I thought..." a mini set-back " but I'll be back in a couple weeks...two to three weeks...a month at the worst...3 months at the most horrendous!

I just hope it rains like hell here. Off to get my fill of hoagies!

Truth is that Otah has never played in more than 13 games in a season anyway. These kind of situations are exactly how you build depth. Magazu has done a great job with low draft picks and guys you never heard of before. I keep waiting for Otah to stay healthy for a whole season, but in the meantime it's great to have Schwartz as a replacement. After all, right now the chemistry has been built with Schwartz not Otah.

I am optimistic we won't have a big drop off.

      Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.

      Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
