What will it take...

For Jimmy's first start to be considered a success? I think a win is a little unrealistic at this point but I feel like if he protects the ball, moves the offense, and completes a decent percentage of his passes then that will be fine in my book. I really think we have to keep our expectations in check. There will be a lot of pressure on him from the bengals defense and I can see a lot of check downs coming. I'm just looking for him to play decent and the offense as a whole to make strides in the right direction.

>50% completion

More TDs than turnovers.

Showing that he progresses through reads and checks down as appropriate.

Showing a modicum of pocket awareness and ability to throw to his hot read.

A win would be really nice as well but I'm not banking on it.

A win is definately a possibility but for success be able to convert 3rd downs move the team up the field and protect the ball we have to believe he will throw some picks because the bengals have a top 3 cb tandem and a stout d but no high school mistakes will b a succes for me. BECAUSE we dont have recieving options outside of smith to really help a young new qb trying to get acclimated

Two PASSING touchdowns by guys not named Steve Smith would be great. Or at least one of the two by a guy not named Smith.

Outscoring T.O and Ochocinco.....AMAZING!

I'd go with this one. If he can lead us to two scores (run or pass) that aren't from some amazing play by Smith, then I would feel better about the offense.

I don't see how a win is unrealistic.

That's because you think Jimmy is all this team needs. You sound just like those guys that were saying the same thing about Smith in the beginning. ONE GUY, I don't care how good he is cannot win a game in the NFL.

It's A TEAM SPORT folks. Stop putting all your hopes on ONE guy. It doesn't work that way.

We need to fix a lot of mistakes for Clausen to have a realistic shot. We need receivers to catch balls, the O-line to protect him and give your running game a chance, we need the coach to continue to make agressive calls like he did yesterday, we need the OC to STOP calling plays like he did two weeks in a row, we need our defense to tackle, and we need our secondary to contain T.O and Ochocinco which I hate to say it, are a much bigger thread than Steve and "insert whoever maybe could possibly if we pray hard enough show up on Sunday", we need Lloyd to kick good, we need our special teams to give us great field position, we need no pics and no turn overs and we need our defense to continue doing the good things they did in the preason.

On top of that.....we need no one else to get hurt.

That's why it can be considered a bit unrealistic but certainly not impossible or out of the question.

    • I consider last year Bryce's rookie year.....and I expect some regression/D adjustment in his second season in Canales' O.  Film is film.   So yeah, I agree....he won't be the dude that opened up the year week 1 or closed the door week 17.  We will get some dude in between it all most likely.  Which IMO puts us in a really awkward no man's land with Bryce.
    • The question is which Bryce shows up game 1. Do we get week 2 (2024) Bryce, or week 18 (2024) Bryce?  I will say that his progression after the benching last year was amazing. He literally got better every game - sans Dallas. Like every week he did something we hadn't seen him do before. And it wasn't luck, toss it up for grabs plays like Penix did against Carolina. Penix was just throwing the ball as hard as he could in the direction of a receiver and hoping they'd make a play for him. What we saw from Bryce was different. Decision making, reading defenses, recognizing blitzes and where they were coming from, knowing his hot, avoiding pressure and manipulating the pocket, throwing with anticipation, taking shots downfield, and running the ball surprisingly well. Stats don't always tell the story. Did he miss some throws that he should have made - sure did. But the clutch gene is strong with this one. One score game and Carolina has the ball with 2 minutes on the clock - I'm confident he'll give them a chance to win more than he doesn't.
    • I really like David Moore. He's a reliable WR. Smart, doesn't drop the ball and he's where he's supposed to be. Now, he ain't gonna route up a DB. He ain't gonna 50/50 ball a DB. He ain't gonna run by a DB either. But he runs a good enough route and catches the ball - definitely an NFL average WR. Every team could use a David Moore. Now if this receiving group can force Dan and Dave to let him go, then this team has come a long way since 2023. A LONG way. But I will say that Horn's speed is a big deal. They don't really have another guy with speed and quickness to blow the top off the defense and make guys miss in space after the catch, though he is still a rookie and hasn't done it in the NFL. If he and Renfrow push Moore out, then we might actually have something gents. Plus I see Renfrow as Thielen's replacement in 2026. I just don't think Coker is the reliable, move the chains guy like Thielen. Could be wrong.
