Clausen celebrated his 23rd birthday on Tuesday, which included a phone call from Sanchez of the New York Jets. He and Clausen became friends growing up in California, and Sanchez last year became only the second rookie quarterback to win two playoff games.

"He was talking about some of the things he wishes he could have heard from somebody in his first start and going into his career,'' Clausen said.

Such as?

"We were just talking about watching tape and trying to get in with different guys,'' Clausen said. "Get in with the center and watch the blitzes. Get in with the receivers and watch different coverages and see what they see.''

Clausen bolted from his locker to watch film after meeting with the media on Wednesday. He appeared more vocal and animated earlier as he worked with the starters in practice, something that wasn't lost on running back Jonathan Stewart.

"He's a little more focused on making reads and being more decisive, quick to the huddle and stuff like that, as any starter would be, I guess,'' Stewart said. "But you can definitely tell he's excited.''

good read from start to finish.

i liked a couple things here:

"It doesn't feel different. It's just getting more reps and that's a good thing,'' Clausen said Wednesday after his first practice since replacing the ineffective Matt Moore. "I have to get in there and get familiar with all the new stuff we're putting in.''

The baby-faced, former Notre Dame star has had quite a week already.

On Monday, a day after a dismal 20-7 loss to Tampa Bay dropped Carolina to 0-2, coach John Fox made the switch to Clausen. Just a few hours later, Clausen got a call from Weis, now the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs.

"He was real fired up,'' a beaming Clausen said. "He called me and the first thing he said was, 'My day got brighter. Congratulations.' My family and his family have a close relationship.''

i'm wondering if weiss isn't going to want to get back to carolina somehow to help with jimmy at some point. he might do some campaigning for the job once it opens up. i'd love to see what those two could do given more than they had at notre dame to work with.

the biggest thing to me, though, was how they were putting in a good bit of new stuff. we might see a very different offense than we did with moore which was probably pretty limited because of who it was under center.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
