When does a new coach stick with the old QB

Pretty much my take.

Not unusual for a coaching ego to say something like "wait till they see what he can do with me coaching him."

If Moore was starting, I would be ready to bet the farm on this. Since they're getting a look at Clausen though, I'm not so confident.

Understood, but I'm going the other way.

Most rebuilding teams don't have a first round QB already in the fold (and realistically, Clausen would be considered a first round QB) unless it's a guy that's been around long enough to have proven a bust.

Unless Clausen just looks completely worthless from here on out, I have a hard time believing the next coach will bail on him. Vet backup? Yeah, but replacement is a tough sell.

With a 4 year deal I think there is no chance they dump Clausen. But I figure they bring in at least 1 vet who knows the system to start and lets Clausen sit the pines and learn to see if he can improve down the road. Much like Fox did with Weinke.

how is Clausen realistically a first round QB?

obviously, Clausen stays. New coach brings in vet to start unless some signifciant steps are taken this year by Clausen from what we are seeing. He isn't even showing hints of promise.....and that is a real concern.

Yeah, theres next to no chance that they dump Clausen. I don't know why anyone would think that they would. The question is whether the new coach would start him. I think the odds are 50/50, but I wouldn't be surprised to see either the coach bring in a vet that is "his guy", or possibly another draft pick with an open competition.

I caused a stir by raising this question at another website. So, I may as well cause a stir here.

When has a coach come into a franchise, who is NEW to the franchise (no in-house promotions), and where the franchise is in a full rebuild mode, and not replaced the QB within a year?

Joe Gibbs came into Washington in full rebuild mode, and kept Joe Theisman.

Belichek kept Drew Bledsoe, and I think the Pats were in full rebuild mode. Well they kept him until he got injured.

Assuming we get a new HC from outside the organization.....

What veterans would be available next spring? The choices may be very slim.

Then, if we have a top 3 pick, will there be a college QB who warrants that pick.

And will Panther fans be willing to wait the usual 2-3 years to develop that kid or do you think he can step in and win ala Joe Flacco and Matt Sanchez from day 1?

Well, Peyton Manning's contract is up this year. Maybe thats why JR is being so tight, so he can afford to sign Manning. ;)

Hard to know who would be available next year. But right now here are some guys assuming that Manning will be gone:

McNabb

Orton

Hasselback

Troy Smith

Seneca Wallace

JT O'Sullivan

Brodie Croyle

Tyler Thigpen

Chad Pennington

Tavaris Jackson

Mike Vick

Dennis Dixon

Billy Volek

Kerry Collins

Kellen Clemens

Bruce Gradkowski

Alex Smith
