Potential Head Coaches

But I do agree somewhat and see where you're coming from. Richardson is a smart guy and probably understands that a coach can operate the team along with Hurney separate from all of the CBA hooplah. Its understandable he's looking longterm without letting all of the owner-players union stuff cloud his judgement.

I'm just getting frustrated that they haven't reached an agreement yet. But heck, maybe our organization is the best suited for a year off.

I get the impression that both sides are working hard on getting a deal done for a new CBA. Their media comments are just ocasional frustration with the process. I would get a little anxious being locked in a room of lawyers for hours at a time also.

Reprinting an earlier post, quoting the beat writers...

Not that he won't coach here, they won't hire him. RT @jis2cool Why do you think Cowher won't coach us!? Offer proof or I don't believe you.

Fans are going to clamor for a big-name coach like Jon Gruden or Bill Cowher, but the Panthers have been down that road before with George Seifert and it was a disaster. However, if the Panthers could persuade Tony Dungy out of retirement, he might be an exception to the rule.

Still, I get an overriding sense from those in the organization that owner Jerry Richardson will go with a hot offensive or defensive coordinator prospect or possibly take a chance on a college coach.

Steve Reed (Gaston Gazette)

Don’t get your hopes too high on big names. If Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden or Tony Dungy want to coach, it will be elsewhere. With the labor situation likely to still be unsolved, Richardson is not going to pay the kind of money one of the big names would command.

He was burned by that once before when he hired George Seifert. Besides, a big-name coach isn’t necessarily what the Panthers need right now. They’ve got a fan base that’s not very happy and they need a coach who will bring in fresh air and also be a bit of a cheerleader.

Pat Yasinskas (ESPN Blog)

Fowler and Sorenson have said the same. As I recall, Charles Chandler did as well. Not sure Joe Person has ever commented. If he did, i missed it.

All of these guys have access to people within the organization, including Jerry Richardson.

Should we believe they're all wrong?

Yeah, when you put all of those sources together, it makes sense Cowher is a long long shot, considering these are a few of the already limited reporters with minimal access in our organization. It just makes sense to have a young energetic guy in the end and hopefully that is what our FO is thinking.

McDermott is still one of my favs at the moment but his red zone defense is slightly troublesome. I'm not gonna hope for anyone in particular because the younger candidates are all exciting and present a great amount of potential: Harbaugh, Moss, McDermott, & Schottenheimer

Actually, they have seen prior coaches coming, and they've seen roster moves coming before we did as well.

It's pretty tough to defend the notion that fans on a message board know as much or more than the beat writers who actually have access to people inside the organization on a regular basis. Especially so given that nearly everything we know comes from them.

If you're a Cowher or Gruden fan, feel free to hope. But if I were you, I'd prepare for disappointment.
