Clausen actually looked like a pro QB today

top dawg

man, Jake, last year? Jake was throwing the ball to the other team a ton. Clausen had NO turnovers today. I would have applauded a Jake with no turnovers.

also, Jake wasn't a rookie, Jake had a great O-Line, and Jake had a great running game.

So yes. I had different standards for the two of them.

You're missing my point. The Panthers won games when Jake had numbers like this yet he was still heavily criticized. Witness the Nov 2008 Oakland game Carolina won 17-6 when Jake went 7/27 for 72 yards and had 4 picks. Fact: the Panthers won and Jake got killed the next day...

Sorry, I just don't pay any attention to the "rookie" thing. My feeling is if the head coach and his staff believe a rookie is ready to start then he's no longer a rookie. Sure, there does exist a learning curve, but if a player is so far behind that learning curve they don't belong on the field.

So, in my opinion, I don't care if Clausen is a rookie or a 4th year vet, someone decided he was ready to be a starting QB in the NFL and is therefore accountable.

I'm not thinking one would hear a lot of "Well, he is a rookie..." in the locker room following another loss. And if the players don't use being a rookie as a reason for mediocrity, failure or success, then fans shouldn't either.

And before you decide I'm a Jimmy-hater, I actually hold Matt Moore even more accountable because he's in his 4th year in the league and there is no reason for some of his mistakes.

But again, as I've stated many times about this team- the coaching staff is piss-poor at developing young talent at the skill positions and it's becoming even more obvious that extends to the interior line as well when you look at the issues along the O-line. There is no development there, either.

We have no choice basically but to start rookies. I don't expect them to perform at the level I do 4 year pros or veterans or whatever. Is he accountable? Sure. I don't think he ran off the field patting himself on the back for how he did, but the fact remains he made some plays and did put us in position... it just wasn't enough, especially with the sieve we call a defense.

Plenty of people are complaining about Clausen. There are plenty of things TO complain about him. There is VERY little blind faith in this guy here. There may be a bit of looking for silver lining, but most of the "head in the clouds" people have fallen back to Earth.

We can agree this staff is bad about developing young talent. They rely a lot on veterans in the locker room for that. You're very right about our O-Line as well. It's just a terrible offense out there, and it's not like Clausen is capable right now of making them look good, but I do not feel any of our rookies are.

I'm not complaining about Clausen and never wanted anything I posted to sound that way. I'm simply being a realist and I'm more pissed off and complaining that this team has made absolutely no progress since Week 1.

9 games into the season and we've been watching the same product week in and week out with no progress. The only difference between this year's product and last are the people playing the roles- and because they are young and inexperienced they will make more mistakes than the last group of guys running the exact same plays.

So, if I'm going to start placing blame it starts on the sidelines with all those guys who wear matching shirts and khaki pants on game days- led by the guy who paces, chews gum and gets excited about a field goal when you're down by 14.

WHY? yOU Ask WHY?

Because you do not want to draft a college QB that cannot even lead his team to victory ! MAKE Sense? Yes it does.

Let's see, with all the resources, name and money of Notre Dame to recruit, Clausen lost to who? Navy (twice), Boston College, North Carolina, Air Force, Georgia Tech (back when they were not good), Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Connecticut among others.

But yet, all we see is people making EXCUSES for Clausen.

Armanti Edwards lost to Wofford

JC looked OK and resembled something we could build on. Step one in rookie development is learn how to make good decisions and protect the ball. Nothing spectacular

Now hopefully he can work on gaining more control of the field.

jake had lots of games that looked similar

Since LPF is on Jimmy's nuts so bad he has to PM me when I'm not around because it's the weekend and I usually only post from the office, here's my two cents.

Jimmy looked better, not good by any stretch of the word but better. During the part of the game that mattered, he was 50% completions for 153 yards, no TDs no INTs. Not bad but not great.

If we are going to play to his strengths and throw the short routes then he needs to have a higher completion %, no doubt about it. The only way the lower YPA is acceptable is if you are completing more of your passes.

The thing that is still frustrating is he can't get the ball in the endzone. How many times has a team won the battle of field position, the turnover battle, had a 100 yard rusher and lost the game?

He only had one scoring drive that DIDN'T start on their side of the field. With the amount of opportunities we were given to start on their side of the field (turnovers, big special teams plays, etc) we should have been able to score more than 1 TD.

I will say that he has improved but will caution it with "we've seen this before." This game reminded me a lot of the Saints game. If he can continue to improve he will have a shot. Anyone saying that he isn't the 3rd best QB to come out is kidding themselves though.
