Dude you can't go wrong with Onkyo. I have the r330 and love it, can't say a single bad thing about it. It bumps and sounds crisp and clear, it rivials the more expensive systems out on the market and at half the price..

The speakers and sub are awesome plus the receiver is very good. But don't take my word , do what i did and research it.. im sure you will find its getting high ratings.

Or your can just click this link lol

Another vote for Onkyo - it's been a great machine to hook up all my different things to, its not hard to figure out - mine has a terriffic on screen setup guide as well. I was set on another Sony when my ancient high powered Sony reciever with 0 HDMI inputs started having issues decoding multichannel but the HH Gregg guy took 20 minutes to get really into describing how the thing worked and it was indeed terrific for the price.

all the audiophiles I know hate Bose. I can barely tell the difference

You can it's just really overpriced and not better or even worse than stuff that costs less. But I think it is a good product overall. My roommate had a 3.2.1. system and it worked well with TV and parties.

I think I've that they use styrofoam cones or something like that before but I don't know if it's true. It also seems like consumer reports is in cahoots with them. Their reviews are always crooked.

if you let the sales guy fool you into the myth that is surround sound then you should Fed Ex me your tv.

I've never heard anywhere that surround sound is a gimmick unless you mean the surround they talk about in tvs. My 300 dollar samsung tv/monitor says it has surround sound and nobody believes that. I've heard it does well as the center channel though.

Surround sound exists and is cool (and overrated...7.1? lol) but if you're short on money you are much better off putting your money into a good receiver and a good pair of stereo speakers. expand the system later. You want it to sound good, not sound "meh" with lots of speakers.

for moderately priced stuff Onkyo and HK are great. Polks are fantastic for the price (especially if you aren't running a sub.)

you get what you pay for.

convincing people to buy 8 speakers for a 15x15 room is a gimmick.

Bose systems are nice but overpriced. Everything they have is nice but overpriced. Good company, good product, super duper overpriced.

Bose customer service is some of the best I have ever encountered. I have a Bose acoustimass speakers hooked up to a Yamaha receiver and I love it.

g5, Does the audio receiver have an optical cable input? My DirecTV receiver can play audio through the HDMI and optical at the same time.

Yep...for sound. The Sony I have no has no HDMI. I'm just looking at something in the future. I'm just using the receiver as the sound manipulator...not as a focal point of moving video/audio. That's future.

I was just noticing that with a lot of systems. I'm probably just going to get some 5.1 speaker setup to plug in with my receiver to get 5.1 for now. Maybe wait a bit to decide on investing on a receiver replacement that adds ipod docking/internet/pandora/etc.
