Who says its about fixing the QB slot?

As has been said about pinning so much on Luck when he hasn't done jack in the NFL, "the bigger the risk the greater the reward".

If the talk of Luck pans out & he's P. Manning or better, they'll get a few weeks of "How could you not have seen this coming? Lol!" & then their rants will be forgotten in a flurry of great QB play.

If he's just good, (7-9, 9-7) & it takes a few seasons to get great, they can start with "Ooo looky! Teh sav-yar! " but build into "hey we may have a star here!" If their current rants are brought up, they get to say "yeah but I'm looking at an NFL QB, not a sophomore who hasn't finished 2 seasons yet."

If he's a bust, years... YEARS of "I told you! I'm one of the only reals fanses here! I know football better than alls yas! Shoulda been the black guy!"

In short, bitchin is fun.

i would like to know who the coach is, and then look for a vet QB that understands the offense we are going to be using. but that is if we go for a vet qb. if we can get Luck fine thats good, but if we cant and we decide to go DT or something in the 1st, or trade down and grab a QB later, while adding picks. then it might make since to get a vet QB with experience in or new system..i think if we could get Jeff Garcia off the couch if we go west coast offense then that would be ideal, he would understand what needs to be done to succeed, and understand he wont be the number 1...i think that wouldnt be a bad idea.

OL excuse is weak unless you want some new starters and not depth.

Like I say in every thread where someone mentions A.J. Green...if we select him, you must also be comfortable with trading Smitty or getting rid of AE.

The alternatives just isn't good enough for us to rationally NOT pick Luck or Newton

So yesterday, I was listening to the local crappy sports programming on the radio in the car as my wife was getting something to eat on 99.9 The Fan in the RDU area... Anyway, these two guys that host the afternoon show Joe Ovius and some other guy that know nothing about football have Mick Mixon on as a guest pretty frequently.

Well, they asked him what did he think being that we wrapped up the #1 pick and should we address the QB situation.

Of course, he offered the disqualifier that "from the press box" in his mind, how could we not look at the QB situation with that first pick? He pretty much said everything he could to suggest QB is a problem area without letting go of the company line.

He went on to say that if we pass up on Luck if he declares, and another team gets him and he goes onto be the next Peyton Manning, then people lose their jobs over stuff like that. But, if we take him and he's a miss, then it sets your franchise back for 3 or 4 more years, IIRC.

But, then he threw in this interesting nugget - he said he knows some people out on the west coast with some "insider" info on Luck, and said that he really thinks he's gonna be the next big one at QB. He said his guys out there told him that Luck has pretty much changed the Stanford offense as the season has progressed. He said he heard that Luck calls many of his own plays on the field, and has actually created variations of existing plays because he's so intelligent/aware on the field and because his skill set has opened up plays further that they already had, or something like that. He also said that Harbaugh's offensive system is pretty extensive and that Luck has obviously mastered that from the stuff I just mentioned.

It was one of the few times I've ever heard Mixon speak and gotten something out of it, so I just thought I'd share, lol.

What about Bradford and Freeman?

Brafford has a coach that does nothing but goes over plays with him after every series and Im not talking the QB coach. Brafford also isnt using the whole playbook no rookie QB does. Clausen is running alot of plays and I think that is one reason he struggle. If we did get Luck I expect the new Head Coach to run a small playbook for him. It will be 2 years before he will be ready to run the team like Manning or Brady.

We will rely alot on the running game and defense the first season.

Plain and simple with a elite QB you have a chance in everygame. Your oline can be bad (A Rodgers) you can have no running game (T Brady) or a bad Def. (P manning). You still have a chance too win.

With a game mang. everything has too be going right good def. great running game. Special teams plays made. People we are in a division where every other team looks like they have a star QB but us.

    • This play was never designed to go to either DJ or Odunze. The primary read is Burden who is stymied early, with the outlet being Kmet if Caleb doesn't like the option for Burden. Given the situation it's pretty obvious the simple play is to take the free yards with Kmet, or if you want to be aggressive just wait a beat longer for Burden to uncover on his double move. If Moore was ever going to be a viable target in this play then Caleb should have started out reading Odunze to hold the safety in the middle and then coming to Moore, but because he started the snap staring down the right and then came back to the middle late it made it where the safety's leverage remained to the outside of Moore, so he would never have imagined that pass actually being thrown to him in that situation. Realistically DJ's best option in that context is to just occupy the safety to leave a hole open for Caleb to get it to Burden, which is probably why he throttles down vs carrying the safety across.
    • Even with Sonny Styles still on the board I thought it's a no brainer to address the Oline after Icky's injury.  And how can you pass up Fano at 19 given our situation. Then the rest of the draft just kind of made sense with maybe the exception of Klubnik.  But if Canales can fix him and Young goes down. . .I think it's a solid pick. What do you think of this draft?
    • When we didn't trade him to the Rams or the Bears (I believe the Bears said they would take one of Brown/ Burns/DJ Moore) we should have just signed him and kept him.  We should have traded him to the Rams obviously and we should have kept DJ and traded Burns.  We made all three wrong choices with Burns lol.
